Mountain Jam is sequenced the way it is so when one side ends, the record changer can just drop the next side without the listener having t get up and flip a record. Hope this helps…

Greg got writers block so he took a break to the grocery store for some milk and there was this little brat running up and down the aisle’s and her grandmother was screaming for her MELISSA….MELISSA! Greg had an aha moment went back and finished the song. True story 😎

I would love to see you analyze the ABB debut album, which I think is their best. To think Gregg WROTE those songs at 21 and SANG them with that voice at 21 is mindblowing, even 55 years later. How adept at learning was Duane? Duane is famous for being a phenomenal slide player, even from their debut album in 1969. However, per Gregg's autobiography, Duane had only started playing slide after hearing Taj Mahal's record from 1968 with Statesboro Blues that had Jessie Edwin Davis playing slide. If you listen to the two versions, it's clear the ABB version is an homage to the Taj Mahal version. But then you realize Duane had only been playing slide for a year when the rest of the world began viewing him as "the best" at it. That being said, I am a huge fan of both Clapton and the ABB and a huge fan of Layla and other assorted love songs but…. I am one of the few who is not of the opinion that LAOALS became epic because of Duane's appearance. The track order of LAOALS is pretty much the order in which the materaial was recorded and per Bobby Whitlock, they had the first 5-6 songs (I Looked Away thru Andyday) on tape before they attended the ABB show and invited Duance back to jam then participate in the rest of the sessions. Also, it can be argued that whatever hole Duane left in the slide guitar universe in the rest of the 1970s was more than adequately covered by Lowell George of Little Feat. Great analysis on all of these. I think I've watched 40 of these in the last week.

The brothers in A minor, is so great with all the layers of that unmatched percussion. My favorite is One Way Out that's from the show that closed down Fillmore East. Dickey in the main solo kills it! It's to bad that somebody dropped the ball on the engineering, and recorded to low. This is one that the music is so good that it outweighs the less than steller mastering.

In 1965, fresh out of High School and owner of a combo organ, I joined a surf music band to bring in the new songs from England. Our first gig was house band for a nightclub in Panama City Beach. When our two weeks was over we were packing up as the new band were unpacking and setting up. That band was, "The Allman Joys" with Dwayne and Greg. After listening to them I almost quit then and there. They were a cover band, but my god they were good!

First of all, Abigail, your blouse perfectly matches the inner gatefold.
A great review! I had reviewed this album on Facebook just after we lost Dickey Betts. Like all your reviews, you make it fun. Those listening to CD have the benefit of not having to get up, turn the record over and listen to the rest of Mountain Jam!
What’s sad is there’s only one original member standing.
I’d love for you to review John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton.

Wonderful album. I'm a big Allman Bros and Dickey Betts (RIP) fan. Glad I was able to see the Allman Bros in the summer of 98 with Dickey Betts and Jack Pearson on guitar(s). Jack played in Gregg Allman's solo band and is an incredible guitarist in his own right. That concert is in my top 5 concerts I've seen list.

Back in the late 70s, during my crazy frathouse days (the house near Washington square park where Edgar Allan Poe once lived), a bunch of us found out the Allman brothers band was going to play a surprise unannounced gig at the lone star cafe (13th St 5th Ave the bar with a giant iguana on the rooftop). We got really close to the stage, and sure enough, the band came on, and we were drunk by then & cheering like it was the super bowl. It was the whole band, minus Gregg who was partying with Cher at studio 54. So Dickie Betts was in charge, and he mostly played stuff from eat a peach while he bummed cigarettes from us, and even paid for one round of beer. It was absolutely amazing, and I'm sure Duane's spirit must've been smiling down upon us all on that magical night. The high points were In Memory of Elizabeth Reed & Rambling Man, and by then we were going nuts. Afterwards, we met them outside the entrance, and in a real 70s moment, Jaimo pulled out a big fat joint and passed it around while we stood in circle. So we not only drank with the band, but got stoned with them too. Sorry I didn't have this ready for eat a peach, but if you ever cover Brothers & Sisters, you can use this story for that video. And Yes, you really did a great job of paying tribute to Duane & Berry, only a real life Layla could've pulled that off. Now for another blue sky Monday 🌞😎

Well that was really REALLY nice. Taught me a few things I never knew as well. I love your passion. May I suggest you rethink your opinion of the end of Mountain Jam. It's a full 90 seconds long! Double that and you have a couple of their early songs in their entirety. It strikes me as EPIC!

Us oldies had record players that had a big tall spindle and disc holding arm that let you stack up albums, so when one side would finish, the needle arm would go back off the disc and the next disc on the stack would drop down. Like a primitive playlist queue. Why is this relevant? “Hey, man… Mountain Jam is too long for one album side. Wait! Dude! Put the first half on side TWO and the second half on side FOUR and stack ‘em up on top of each other! That way we don’t have to get off this couch!” “Duuude… that’s genius…” It was not uncommon for classical, jazz or experimental albums to use the same trick to let the listener enjoy up to 45 minutes with minimal interruption. Have a look at “stackable, multi-stack or stack-o-matic “ record players. Beautiful old things. Love your channel and your deep analysis. Keep doin what yer doin!

The reason mountain jam is on 2 different Records instead of on the same one on different sides. It's because You play one side of a record as soon as it's over. The next record will drop down Off the carriage and Plays the second half of the song with only a very short pause In Between the 2.That's how record players used to work Back then..I don't know how they work now.I can't find one

It WAS entirely impossible for the tech to match both pitch and speed on the masters. Believe me both George Martin and I have invested many hours in the attempt. When bands are digitally torn apart and put back together they don't sound right. Electromagnetic tape also picks up the space between in the recording process and I am not going to explain "the space between" (see Avalon). When you remove the space between the band begins to sound like not-so-much a band. Jimmy Page's remixes are actually good and he is the exception and he knows how to play a studio.
