Vertical micro-dramas are short low-budget movies shot vertically, cut into 2-minute cliffhanger episodes, and apparently getting more daily screen time than Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ combined. I had to understand what was going on, so I sat through all 70 episodes of Resisting Mr. Lloyd: An Age Gap Romance, a story about a construction worker, a billionaire CEO, a senile grandmother who threatens to jump off buildings, and approximately 47 Shein product placements. I now understand everything about the micro-drama industry and I am never doing this again unless this video does well.

Not to be a conspiracy nut, but every single thing that happens in every single one of these microdramas is a trope in trashy Chinese web novels. I can 100% believe that the production company, streaming company, sponsorship company (e.g. Shein), and the AI that writes the screenplays are all owned by Chinese billionaires.

One plot gimmick Ryan mentioned jumped out at me, and I can see it working very well in this format. Jerks keep trying to undercut the bride, it backfires, and they get fired or humiliated in short order. That would never work in a conventional movie. It would be tiresome and repetitive, but in a micro-drama designed to be watched in two-minute episodes, it would be very satisfying. Who'll be the next jerk to get her comeuppance?!
