Arthur Brooks studies happiness for a living, and he says the epidemic of depression and anxiety among young adults comes down to one culprit: a meaning crisis.

Brooks walks through the biology of falling in love, the real formula behind human suffering, and why a Harvard study spanning 85 years found deep relationships to be the single strongest predictor of a happy old age.

This is much like what German-Korean philosopher Byung Chul Han says. We must be ready to be bored instead of being totally overloaded with irrelevant information the entire day. I don't agree with left vs right hemisphere. You may say that the left hemisphere is overtrained and overprepared, so that for instance, falling in love will not work anymore.

Dopamine … I've pivoted my work towards VTA and "reward circuits".
Seems to me there's epidemic of addiction to instant pleasure in the moment … which leads to dopamine depletion.

It is not clear to me why there is so much emphasis in this video on smartphone addiction. It is not the cause of the meaning crisis, but rather its symptom, just like any other additction.
Thus, though the advice on limiting smartphone use is valid, it is not a solution to the meaning crisis.
Something has changed in the world that more and more people cannot access the sources of meaning such as love, transcendence and calling anymore. I doesn't seem right to me that it is simply because we "cured boredom".

    Hey everybody..

The video analysis and talking points are based on a survey from 20 YEARS ago.

How is that relevant to current day younger generations?

Title: "The Meaning in Life Questionnaire: Assessing the Presence of and Search for Meaning in Life"
Authors: Michael F. Steger, Patricia A. Frazier, Shigehiro Oishi, and Matthew E. Kaler
    Journal: Journal of Counseling Psychology
    Publication Date: 2006 (Volume 53, Issue 1, pp. 80–93)

It's also that ppl have kids later and later, while our parents have us in their 20 they have to grind from the start and have no time for mental issues.

I disagree with the sentiment of religion and transcendence. Religion in America is largely broken, especially regarding Christianity.

Seeking transcendence within a system that operates to reinforce political/social conformity norms and not give its members transcendence is not going to help anyone.

As a matter of fact it has hurt many people for many years.

Professor, you're very dubious! You completely don't understand the essence of the problem! They came up with a questionnaire with no answers. Empty words. Young people don't want to race for the super-rich. Isn't that clear???

This is about so much more than boredom and motivation. If you’re a bit irritated with the way expert is speaking – fight it and listen anyway – you won’t regret it

Once I read an essay of a Dutch philosopher with the title: you should be glad that life has no meaning. That was the most liberating thing in my life. At the moment I realised life has no meaning, it made me very happy.
Never have to ask why something is happening to me, because I know it’s just random events. And that makes it so much easier to accept all kind of life events

Thank you Brooks. I’m happy and grateful to be able to serve the humankind as a psychiatrist. This “calling” is challenging exactly because a lot of the people I see (the majority of my clients are young adults) suffer from this “meaninglessness” (without their awareness of it) or are “lost in place”. One thing I always tell them in order to instil them a tint of hope is, the fact that you’re sitting here means you do want some change.

Thanks to tech algorithm which brought me here. Yesterday a coming-of-age young lady showed me her journal that writes (I believe she never showed to any living creature), as I’m turning 17, I am feeling this intense sense of “fakeness”, of myself being hypocritical to everyone and everything surrounding me. I don’t know who I am, I felt being suddenly thrown into this world, without any past, with a blurred identity that I can barely recall. I’m like living in a vacuum, both inside and outside. I looked up to her (from her phone, which is turned black and white), and asked, have you read any philosophy? She shook her head. Never. Not a single book nor an article. Shocked by the premature awakening of this young person, per se, as it seemed to be, don’t know why on that spot I hesitated to invite her to read Heidegger, or Sartre, or the Greeks. Only finding myself turning my phone into black and white after watching your clip. Thanks again.

You act like "we did all this" when in fact it was the only option that capitalism gave us. The manufacturers and producers of the platforms and "solutions" you are suggesting were "answers" are responsible, not "we." It is kind of difficult to listen to you blame "society" when there are specific companies and individuals that were responsible for how technology was shaped into what it is now.

I was doing a 3 hour drive to a destination two days ago, no radio station reception, no cd's or mp3's, and NO snacks. Man was I bored. So I started singing the first song that came to my mind several times over. That helped, but I was appalled by my lyrics recollection, or lack thereof! Who the heck knows the lyrics to What Shall We Do With a Drunken Sailor? Or even some of my favourite 80's hits!

This isn't just a young person's thing. A lot of us who are 50 and older have had our sense of meaning and purpose quietly eroded for over a decade. This is not just from being shut out of work, but from watching the things that used to give life structure, meaning, and worth get stripped away, one piece at a time. Feeling left behind isn't new, and it isn't generational.

You know you manage live speaking and storytelling when 2 hours seem like 5 minutes. Obviously it is well edited, and nobody knows how many shoots it took to make this video. But honestly, guys, you rock

treating suffering as something to be individually coped with rather than a structural condition to be changed is wrong . Ignacio Martín-Baró was murdered for making this argument .
