Drake is one of the biggest and most successful musicians of all time and within the last decade has made an indelible mark on hip hop as it’s most recognizable, marketable, bankable, and influential figure… and F.D isn’t too happy with that.
In this video F.D tries to parse through the complex nature of Drake’s presence in modern hip hop and pop music and explains why Drake’s rise and dominance of the hip hop world is much worse than you think.

You guys are weird in the comments. This isn't some 1 hr long diss track. This is a constructive criticism of Drake as an artist. Fucking stans/haters battling in the comments for no reason.

I also think that quicky glossing over what you call "him doing pr" through giving back is bad faith argument because it just completely throws out how massive he has contributed to the culture in that sector.

it is unfair to put the entire commercialization blame on him when artists like Eminem and Kanye existed before him, about talking about black issues in his music I feel like as an outsider with identity issues he settled for giving to the culture how best he knows which is through money and it's not like he completely walked away from talking about black issues he has a song with snoop dawg on that, if he did talk about it in his music the culture would still not have felt satisfied with it, people would have called it inauthentic because again he has not had the true black american experience so the soul you were talking about wouldn't be there. If we are actually being honest which you alluded to with the gatekeeping part we feel threatened that an outsider has been able to gain way too much power in this sport we created.

Comparing Drake to pizza is wild and wrong. I love pizza. I don't like Drake.
As a 56 year old hip hop head when Drake pulled out that blackberry I was what part of the game is this. When I heard about the ghostwriters I was done.

This is an old video and I'm here after Iceman dropped, and watching it in 2026 is wild, because half your thesis aged into prophecy and the other half got quietly complicated by what's happened since.
The prophecy part: you called Drake "content, not music," a commodity optimizing for numbers over substance, way back in 2022. Then in May he drops a surprise 43-track trilogy, Iceman, Habibti, and Maid of Honour, all at once. If that isn't the purest possible expression of your "I make content, I make a buffet" argument, I don't know what is. Andscape literally reviewed it as extraction over inclusion, asking why give people the meal when they can treat the music like a buffet line and pick their own ingredients. They basically rewrote your pizza metaphor without crediting you. The numbers cosign it too. "Janice STFU" debuted at number one and broke Michael Jackson's record for the most US number ones by a male artist. The chart machine you described is running at full throttle.
But here's where your video gets complicated, and I'd actually love your follow-up on this. Your whole spine was that hip-hop lost the power to arbitrate its own canon, that the Pusha L changing nothing proved the culture's verdict no longer mattered, that the world stopped listening to the gatekeepers. Then 2024 happened. Kendrick, the exact figure you positioned as the heir the culture wanted, delivered a verdict so loud it became a Super Bowl and a record of the year. The culture did reassert itself. So which is it? Either that vindicates your gatekeeper instinct, the immune system still fires, or it means the "world stopped caring what hip-hop thinks" claim was overstated even in 2022.
And the substance thing finally bit Drake back. The critics aren't framing Iceman as empty fun anymore. Pitchfork described it as a drawn-out exercise in cold, self-pitying indulgence. Your "no substance" line always smuggled in two different complaints. Iceman exposes the real one. It's not that he can't be introspective, since reviewers noted the genuine vulnerability about his father's cancer and the label war. It's that the introspection is all inward, all grievance, never communal. Which is exactly the "sells blackness, never stands up for it" point you made, just curdled into self-pity now that the wins stopped feeling guaranteed.
So my honest read three years later: your commodification framework was the strongest part and it's only gotten sharper. Your "the culture permanently lost control" framing was the weakest part and Kendrick partially refuted it. And the most interesting thing you couldn't have known, Drake the all-powerful symptom is now visibly anxious, dropping 43 songs at midnight asking "what did I miss." That's not a man winning the game you described. That's a man who heard the verdict.

44:41 all these years later and people still don't seem to understand that this was the departure point. Drake moved like an asshole after this but given what preceded it I really can't blame him
