“Black Love” as a concept has been around for decades as an aesthetic that black people aspire to when seeking out romantic partnerships. However, when you sit back and examine the concept of how we imagine black love, you realize the “black” part of it doesn’t mean a whole lot. In fact, a lot of how we look at and define black love seems to be directly connected to an image of love that is completely pulled from frameworks that were never meant for black people.

In this video F.D examines the dangers and problems of accepting this framework uncritically and talks to various black couples about their experiences with love as well as shows like HBO’s Love Live and Insecure as well and numerous pop culture happenings with intended goal of killing our concept of black love goals.

I know that if different people are not feeling this one for different reasons, then I've probably accomplished exactly what I was going for with this one.

talking about, "what i was doing was my way of trying to show love to you, but i wasn't loving you the way you wanted to be loved" was so poignant & sweet it nearly brought a tear to my eye. honest imperfection & repair feel so much more important to me than a relationship never having any flaws in the first place – kinda like how it's said that you don't know a person until you've seen their reactions to difficulties in life. "sure, you have fun together, but can you fix something as a team with this person?"

I appreciate the alternative interpretation of the "Entanglement" story – maybe because I only really saw the event based around the clip from the show, or maybe because I have a subconscious bias towards Will since I'm a man as well and related to the pain it looked like he was feeling I hadn't thought about what Jada had gone through.

It doesn't quite excuse what happened, but it makes it clear that everyone involved was a kind of victim of circumstance because of a lot of toxic external forces pushing them in a particular direction.

Just stumbled upon this despite being a long-time viewer and… thank you.
I'm a white, non-hetero, poly woman married to a white, hetero, non-poly (but accepting) man. We're going through a serious conflict and as it was said, we don't see couples going through that, we just see either happy couples, entirely miserable ones, or divorces. I'm from a dysfunctional family, conflict-resolution is something I'm still trying to figure out, and the fact that in my society we're taught not to talk about family issues with other people doesn't help.
This vid gave me warmth and advice that I needed. <3

Do beautiful black women intentionally put less effort into maintaining their appearance once they get married? Because I noticed the wife of a close friend of mine cut off most of her natural hair once she no longer needed to look so good. It bothered me but I don't plan on bringing it up with him. It's not really any of my business, obviously. I just think he deserves a wife that is just as beautiful as she was when they met.
Another childhood friend of mine had a wife who gained a lot of weight after they got married. I remember being offended FOR him. They ended up getting a divorce, of course, but I wholeheartedly expect her to lose all that weight as quickly as possible to attract another man.

By the way, I love Black women, the only women worth marrying and going through things with. As a Black man, I know this instinctively, they understand our struggle. I am happy with my wife 100% good and bad times. I take pride in my wife, I am proud of my wife, I would die for my wife, and she knows this.

At the end of the day, capitalism is the problem, and the limitations that are placed on the individuals in relationship. As Black people we are already limited, and it places pressure on family relationships on a whole. However the family has to have a visionary, someone who dreams of elevating their partners and themselves past these limitations , because it eases conflict and allows for love to come through, because you know why you want to succeed, itโ€™s for your partner. And you must tell them that, and listen to them and their concerns, and change. You must be flexible, and remember this is the person you love. White capitalism has been destroying our families for generations. It is imperative that we see our success as our partners success, so if the job is getting in the way of bonding with your partner, quit the job. Never quit your partner if they are standing by you. You can find another job, you cannot buy the time you invested in a loved one.
