Why This Cover Of My Song Made Me Cry (Almost)

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | July 28, 2026

Thanks to everyone who directed me to Musora and Joey Landreth’s cover of my song, I Believe In A Thing Called Love. There have been many before. I haven’t loved all of them. However, Joey is a huge talent and I think what he did with the song was spectacular.
My Producer would like me to apologise for the Pencil aside, but it’s valuable information, so I’ve refused.

Hey Justin! Joey here.. whoa man, I’m blown away that you took the time to listen. Thanks so much for your kind words!! As I said in the video, I’m a huge fan of you. Your music, the darkness and your videos. The only reason that I didn’t use the Rhodes is that we couldn’t chase out a brutal ground hum. I swear I tried!!!

The pencil does actually appear to be a hexagonal shaped one rather than cylindrical when you look at the shading on it @5.55. I'm a tad OCD re pencils I'll admit 🙂

Joey's guitar is actually the result of a C&D, the builder used to make spot-on recreations of vintage Les Pauls and Gibson told him to stop, Joey's guitar is the 'after' version that's been changed enough to be considered original

Saw the Brothers at the Union Chapel in the spring. They were fabulous. Brought tears to my brother In law’s eyes. And I bought the DirtDog pedal.

Must be a great feeling knowing that your music has touched a soul to repackage it for other people. I thought it was good and arranged well but I feel this would be perfect for an elevator going to the 44th floor. This is proof that "I Believe In a Thing Called Love" is a great song! Champagne please!

It'd be funny, wouldn't it….?", hahhahahhhhaha! it was almost like I started living thru what you were saying…the pencil falling out of the beanie and just clacking and bouncing off of that Gibson acoustic…ruining the take…unless of coarse on play back it turns out to be some kind of Bob Ross "happy accidents" to where, on playback, everyone in the control room is like "Oh man, that was freaking awesome"…you know, like if when it happened it matched some lyrical content…and then it turns into a night-mirror of "well, how am I going to ever be able to pull that off live now???", bwahahaha! Back to watching and listening. Thanks for another, Justin.

Justin you hit the nail on the head, muting unplayed strings is what separates a crap slide player from a good one. My lap steel inspiration Kelly Joe Phelps (RIP) has a video and he muses at the juxtaposition of needing absolute stiffness and precision to hit the note but the subtleness of touch to musicly play the note. If you cannot hit the note it sounds terrible but if you're too precise it's robotic, so you have to be tasty like Joey, Derek Trucks and alike.

Justin, why do you feel offended by the "going back a 1,000 years" comment? You look fabulous for someone 1,000+ years old! Here's to another 1,000 years! PS: That cover by Joey was superb!

This is peak internet. One legend, discovering another. Wonderful stuff.

Justin, give ‘Let It Lie’ by the Bros Landreth a spin. Your ears will be most grateful ✌️

Joey is awesome, would be cool to see you check out some of his other work. He’s a great lyricist too, check out Whiskey
