North Carolina based folk singer-songwriter Natalie Jane Hill’s “I Thought Love Meant” drifts like a hopeful cloud that knows it might fall apart at any moment. It’s a song built on the quiet wreckage of expectations: what love is promised to be, what it so often isn’t, and the stubborn human instinct to keep reaching for it regardless.
There’s disappointment here, sure. But it’s not bitter. It’s observant. Hill sings from that familiar, bruised vantage point where you can suddenly see everyone else who’s been here too. Wanting to hold on longer than they should, because the alternative feels worse.
The song understands that love can fail you and still be worth the risk.
Hill’s new album, Hopeful Woman, arrives March 6, 2026. Keep an ear open for it y’all.
Lyrics:
I thought love meant hurting
For it to be working just right
And I thought love meant holding
Onto the very thing
That clipped those wings from flight
And I thought love meant giving up
The little glow that makes you whole
And I thought love meant being
Someone else you don’t know
Now I am learning love can feel easily free
You show me how simple and how light it oughta be
I’m not sure I’ll ever know just how to name the thing
That takes me through the ether
Past the sky, out past everything
I thought love

A unique voice and a very dreamy song. I wasn’t ready for it to end so I’ll just play it again. It’s a mood-maker.
