Transforming a Gay Truck Driver into the Biggest Star in Hollywood: Rock Hudson’s Rise & Fall
In the middle of the 1950s, America fell in love with Rock Hudson. Ranked the #1 box office draw in the country, Rock was an American ideal of masculinity — strong, confident, and above all, romantic. But the figure that America worshiped as the perfect man was really a façade propped up by years of scheming and betrayals. It was a secret that stayed hidden in plain sight for years… until a crisis struck, destroying decades of secrets and lies in an instant, and kicking off a movement that would go on to change the course of millions of lives. This is the story of Rock Hudson, the rom-com star who became a symbol of American masculinity — and what happened when that image was shattered.

I am surprised that you didn't mention that Hudson and Taylor had a bet with each other who would have an affair with Dean first.. (according to Taylor herself..) in the end it was Hudson that slept with James Dean first… While on the set of Giant…!

I remember growing up thinking I’m gonna die because I was gay. I was just a little kid so… what did I know about AIDS? It was a kind of stress I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

My mother introduced me to the Rock Hudson Doris Day rom coms. I love Pillow Talk! They are so perfect together. Excellent chemistry. I love that they were so close in real life. She stood by him to the end.

I’m a 73 year old Chinese man and was in college in San Francisco during 1972-1978 , i had just left the States at the end of the late 70s and in the early 80s i was hearing of my friends dying. One of them was especially tragic as the young man had just come out in his early 20s and die very quickly from AIDS.
Elizabeth Taylor was the beacon of light for this ballooning crisis and with her star power she carried the banner for all those affected with this health crisis with the energy and devotion to further the research into HIV that only she could have done.

My mother was so in love with Rock Hudson-when he died of Aids-she was totally gutted. I was in my 20's and after a time of her facing the tragedy of her favorite Movie Star-she said to me ":Don't ever doubt it Rock Hudson was the greatest actor in the world!: Poor Woman…..

Great video! It's a shame that so many people willingly ignore the parallels of today's anti-trans agendas and the anti-gay agendas of the 20th century. Both serve the same purpose of maintaining a binary gender system where no one is allowed to cross a line. What Rock Hudson (and many others) had to endure is, in many ways, the same violently imposed lie of (cis-)heteronormativity as we see in forced detransitions today.

My grandmother adored Rock Hudson and I watched Doris and Rock movies with her. When Hudson was outed by catching Aids and then died shortly afterwards, she never found out how he had died {not much of a news reader and this was pre internet}. I decided not to tell her so that she could keep the fantasy. I don't regret that, even though I am now gay myself.

This is such a powerful story. I was so touched by how people responded to Rock's announcement, his friends and fans stood by him and the outpouring of love was a beautiful thing. I shed the first of what became a flood of tears as I recalled Klaus Nomi. Klaus was a performance artist in the 1970's and '80 who died of AIDS in 1983. People did not rush to his side, he was shunned by many and treated as a pariah. His voice and spirit still resonate across time and his story should continue to be told. Matt, thanks for your insights, keep up the great work!

I really enjoyed your content and information on Rock. I am a fan of his even tho i was born in the 70s. What an awful life for gay men, hiding ppl you love or relationships. How sad.life is so short .we lost a legend too young.❤

My childhood gay male friend use to tell me all the guys in the neighborhood that hated gays, attacked them, the same kind of man who searched him out when it got dark. Just like the confidenatal writer/owner. He use to say they couldnt help hurting people. I knew who alot of these upstanding against gay people were. When i got older i use to watch his apartment. Yes i watched who went in, and… let me tell you i was truely shocked, he was right. The same people who told me he was dirty and i should stay away, didnt stay away in the dark. Lmmfao

I am now 63. In the seventies I was a young teenager coming of age. Although Rock was of an earlier generation, I had a crush for him by watching him on McMillan and wife. I only came out of the closet 4 years ago. I too lived a life of two personas for all those years. This story brought tears flowing down my cheeks 😢. I wish I had lived an authentic life during my younger years. Nevertheless, I am fulfilled and enjoying my new experiences. I do feel reborn. Rock Hudson will always be remembered and loved ❤ by me.

There was so many gay actors back in the day that hid their identity, and it was always a good looking ones with the Buffy bodies. I think they built their bodies to look big to hide the gayness, which is sad because they live most of their life in a lie.

As a straight woman, born in the mid 1960s, I, too, fell for Rock Hudson's handsome looks when I first saw him on TV when I was a pre-teen. I think it was in some movie in which he played a native American. I loved his rom-coms with Doris Day and McMillan and Wife. And Giant, of course, that epic movie with Liz Taylor, is also a favorite.
What I hated most about him being "outed" once it became public that he had AIDS, was the fact that almost every publication jumped on the chance to blame his illness on the stereotyping of the "gay lifestyle" as being promiscuous as in "they brought it on to themselves". Everybody seemed to conveniently forget that Rock had a quintuple bypass surgery in November 1981, during which he received bloodtransfusions. Back then, donor blood was not yet screened for HIV. That was the way the wife of actor Paul Michael Glaser (Starsky & Hutch), Elizabeth Glaser, got infected when she hemorrhaged while giving birth to the couple's first child!!!!! Hudson could have easily gotten infected with HIV during his heart surgery, but everybody saw it as a golden opportunity to out him, which was disgusting.
