Adrian Smith on the Origins of the Heavy Metal Guitar Sound | Raw and Uncut

BANGERTV - All Metal | July 16, 2026

In 2010 Sam Interviewed Iron Maiden’s Adrian Smith on an episode of Metal Evolution. They discussed the origins of the Heavy Metal guitar sound from the Blues to Classical to Jazz.

RAW and Uncut offers a glimpse into full raw unedited conversations from Banger Films long form films and programs. While often only a few minutes from a conversation will make it to air, we believe every conversation about music deserves a full audience.

Did he really say to Adrian « When you respond..,If you could look at me,it’s bizarre» !? What an idiot thing to say. You should be lucky he talks to you at all!

Excelent interview but Adrian is so quiet and humble that it seems that he´s not interested in talking. Also, I´ve noticed he doesn´t give a huge recognition to Judas Priest, by the way. Cool charming guy and great musician anyway.

Never got a solid answer to what he and Dave did differently… but we all know the answer to that question anyway: they both play solos end they're both really good at it, and they're not just copies of guys trying to play in some particular fashion: the interplay of Dave's improvised flurries of legato notes contrasting with Adrian's planned, organized melodic approach which was also very emotionally impactful… there's really nothing like it even to this day.

    Up the Irons!

Hello, please interview Jake E. Lee, one of the most talented guitarist/arranger/composer most people have never heard of. His vocabulary and creativity on the guitar is truly above lots of the usual suspects star metal players. Thank you 🖤

Interviewer: What did it feel like?
    Adrian: It was great.
    Interviewer: Why was it great?
Adrian: It just is, I don't know.
Interviewer: Why is it "It just is," rather than "it just isn't"? What makes it "is"?

What a waste of an opportunity!

My favorite guitar player, his melodicness ( if that's even a word) is out of this world! The way he phrases his solos is absolutely amazing! When he left Maiden he took that with him and it was missing till he came back!!!
