Why Iron Maiden sold its rights, and what it ACTUALLY means for the fans

Metal Pilgrim | July 16, 2026

Iron Maiden just sold the rights to their catalog, name, and Eddie to Pophouse.

Yes, that same Pophouse who are also responsible for the ABBA and Kiss avatars.

And this, of course, has quite a lot of Iron Maiden fans all around the world freaking out. So let’s take a look at what it actually means, what will happen to Eddie and all of the future live shows, and then answer the most popular question of all: whether Iron Maiden avatars are coming. Here you go!

So first and foremost, what is going on and what exactly is being sold? Today, Iron Maiden have announced a major partnership with the Swedish entertainment and music investment company Pophouse, which has acquired a stake in three major parts of the Iron Maiden business: the band’s music publishing rights, its master recording rights, and its name, image, and likeness rights, including of course everyone’s beloved mascot, Eddie.

And the official statement does not really disclose any financial terms of this agreement, but Billboard reported that Pophouse acquired a 50% stake, and Pophouse CEO Jessica Karavas described the arrangement as a 50/50 partnership with the band, which of course sounds pretty cool, what exactly does that mean?

Sorry, if Kevin Shirley and Steve Harris produce a possible new album, Im not really interested. Been a fan since 1982, and Maiden hasn't had good album production since Martin Birch.

When I was a kiddo, and I just had became an Iron Maiden fan, 1983, I remember my older brothers & sister friends, classic rock freaks & punks, always saying that Iron Maiden are a greedy, capitalistic, corporate company.
But at least, it was their own company.
From now on & after Nicko's retirement, it became a legacy thing…..

The guys aren't getting any younger, and each time they announce a new tour, I make sure I get tickets (the last one was City of London Stadium last year – IM's home turf), but if we are honest, there are far fewer future concerts ahead than there are behind us, so this could be a good thing, to keep the music alive.

Absolute sellouts. Totally on brand for them though with the never ending greatest hits tours they've been doing non stop, something they mocked other legacy bands for doing. Obviously not making enough money from that. Pathetic.

I doubt we’ll get another Maiden album, and in my opinion, this confirms it. Given the constant rumors that Dave has wanted to leave the band for years, and with both Bruce and Adrian increasingly focused on their own musical projects, I find a future album unlikely.

Oh, EddFest was designed by Pophouse? Do an event/showcase in America it's a thumbs up for me!

Like, a virtual Iron Maiden event at Cosm/the Sphere would be sick.

I 100% agree with your point about this being a very good sign that there will be another Maiden album…the promotion power and interest that PopHouse provides would make that a very lucrative endeavor for both Maiden and Pophouse.

As a lifelong fan, these guys do not owe anyone anything. I’m not a fan of the last few records, and I wouldn’t lose any sleep if they called it a career. It was a great ride!

This deal is good for the band, the people around them (families, crew, employees) and will ensure that fans get more experiences to enjoy. I won't get into how but I have some insight into what ABBA have done and it benefits a lot more people than just the band. ABBA looked after the people who helped them become and stay successful as well as their families.

Not gonna lie, I've been a die hard fan since Fear of the Dark, and this makes me feel a bit apprehensive… but it's too early for me to make my own judgement on this so I'll wait a while.

For me it would be best they call it a day. One last final album and then retirement. The last album I felt ecstatic was Dance Of Death, all the albums that came after were kind of ok but nothing spectacular. Most songs are too long and the energy/aggressivness really took a hit. Also the latest stadium tours suck, in smaller venues the music and energy sharing between the band and the crowd really made it another level of feeling their music.

    As ever, balance from the video, but the issue and several comments here are why so many don't share such details with the fans;

because they're not educated enough to understand what they're being told.

We've also still got recent disproven assumptions about the band in comments here… do your research, if you care. Honestly folks, if you don't know, don't throw stones

Cashing out before retirement. Despite what they say, they're in it (mainly) for the money, which is legit. The guys are appriaching end of career and life as well, its understandable to cash out on the rights and enjoy the well earned monnies.

It will be like their latest movie in the theaters: it will bring nothing new to us but it will increase their bank accounts and decrease ours.
Anyway, I am hopeful about this and expecting something good to come.
    Up the Irons! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

They have cashed in at the end. How can anyone begrudge them of that.

I think this is awesome for me because i am one who is Swedish and from Stockholm and this could mean so much for me and when this news came out i was flabbergasted and its so sick that we Sweden have this bands and Kiss. I hope we do it right because we Sweden are one of the biggest Maiden fanbase and we love them so much and like everything they do and play even The X Factor and Virtual XI and for me they are actually soo good. I will like The X Factor in my heart i hope forever and its Sooo underrated even Virtual XI and that says that those facts are like true. So lets see if we do it right and i think so 100% but we will see and i hope we Sweden don't fck up and lets see what happens now with stuff that can happen now with the stuff they do that you said at the end but now even more of it so im so excited so lets see what happens and now lets see what tours and music stuff they put out in the future and lets see if we get a new album now after 2027. 🙂🤘🔥💯😁💥

Copyright, in the natural world, is a travesti. Ideas are infinite, you don't "own" something that exists in the ether. Private property exists for something real, that is limited, and can't be shared or used by everyone, so the need to secure your ownership: You and other person can't eat the exactly piece of food that is needed for your survival, so your existence relies on a private property.

When you listen a song, though, the original creator of the song, don't lose the song, it doesn't vanish from the head of the creator because that song is now "playing" in your head. Of course it's annoying when someone copies something you created, but the laws can't be written because you felt bothered, laws must be created to solve conflicts, and real conflicts only occur when people are fighting for limited resources. Copyright a song, has the same principle of someone copyrighting the word "apple", or the number "2". Makes no sense AT ALL.

With all that said, people, the cattle, accept anything, as long as introduced discretly or existed previous their existence, and we will defend it just because "it's how the things are". Wrong! Most things in the world must be revised, because lots of things were created for the most ridiculous demands or motivation. The copyright was created, probably, because someone wanted to secure lots of money, and did the lobby with people with power to do it.

Luckily, reality always strike, today, you can't dowload any song you want, without paying for the gatekeepers. Still limited, because they can charge you (under menace of violence of the State), if you do a cover of a song in an album release, but still something, musicians learned the hard way and accepted that they only will make real money, by doing live presentations, not selling music.

Personally.. I am here for the music. Been a fan since Powerslave. The band members have earned every penny they can squeeze from their legacy. Plus this may help protect their legacy going forward as technology advances through AI (I am not meaning using AI themselves.. but from their music being used BY AI without proper payment for the data the AI was trained on.. i.e. their music composition, vocal styles, etc.) If it brings in new fans through cross-platform integration on behalf of the band itself.. without the band having to lift a finger other than to create new music or perform live.. then I do not see that as a band thing, overall. New fans are the path forward as older fans literally age and pass away.
