Louis Theroux Meets New Mothers Battling Severe Mental Illness After Pregnancy

Real Stories | July 11, 2026

Louis Theroux returns to the UK to spend time in specialist psychiatric units which treat mothers experiencing serious mental illness whilst allowing them to live alongside their babies. Immersing himself on the wards, he meets women who have been admitted with a range of serious conditions – including depression, anxiety and psychosis – often triggered by birth or the strains of motherhood. As he follows the patients and their families both in hospital and recovering back at home, Louis explores what lies behind their recent crisis and discovers the immense challenge in caring for two people in the most vulnerable state of their lives.

The sheer astonishing event of birth also brings us to a new perspective on the fragility and moment-to-moment awareness of how quickly life can be over. Sometimes this frightens & overwhelms us, all the unknowns, responsibilities, hormonal tidalwaves, and delicate balance that exists within ourselves.

This is the absolute best documentary I have ever seen… and I am quite obsessed with documentaries. This one really hit me hard in many different ways. Some of these ladies experiences were familiar to me but also overall it was so validating and I know I have not been alone in this. It takes time to heal… sometimes 4-5 years after the birth of a child. Thank you for sharing these womens' stories!

What a beautifully done documentary———so crucial a subject. These families are brave and noble to share these dark, yet hope filled days with you ———obviously a wonderful father yourself who engenders genuine open hearted ness and kindness ———God bless all of you involved in the creation of this.🕊💙🕊🩷🕊💙🕊🩷🕊💙🕊🩷🕊💙🕊🩷🕊💙🕊

I do not have kids, but this recording is so important to get right. This is a huge hormonal imbalance these women are regular shmegular women… bought the hormones that go through a woman's body (after giving birth) is complicated and underestimated… please do your research and don't judge

For some reason, the first time i was pregnant i was really afraid that i was pregnant with a dwarf. I was so afraid that i was going to have a child who had an obvious life difficulty, and be conciously aware of it everyday. Sometimes i would cry about it! Like i was afraid that i wouldn't know how to make my child feel happiness and strength. So to counteract my negative thoughts i would think about the burden Mary must have felt bearing the Savior of mankind. And with with thought experiment i imagined that if I had God in my belly, would I ever yell at at God? Or be away from God? And then i read Dr. Sears book about attachment parenting, i probably went a little overboard. I think that when you have mental problems, you just need to put that focus somewhere else. Like instead of having anxiety that my baby was a dwarf, anxiety that my baby was God. Both are stressful. Both made me feel like i needed to try really hard. Hard enough that i waited 10 years before i had another child. And that worked for me, i got to enjoy them both so much.

These women had problems before the baby came. They had no business getting pregnant in the first place, especially the woman @9:35. My goodness she had no business being around a baby.. Reminds me of Diane Downs. Getting drunk at a hotel after going AWOL, and having to be sedated with drugs is masking much deeper issues than depression.

Fantastic documentary and I am really impressed with the mothers who decided to share their story about such a vulnerable part of their lives.

I can see why Katherine was struggling to connect with her baby when she said that she was still grieving the loss of the first baby and how painful it was. Her brain was trying to protect her from being in so much pain again so loving her son from an emotional distance was how she could cope until they got her medication and therapy just right.

My daughter suffered sudden and severe PPD after the birth of her twins. Her physician treated her with injections of progesterone every 3 days for two weeks. She had improvement immediately. I was astounded to see the difference in her. It was alsmost as if she was feeling better before we arrived home after the first injection.

While I love that they are focused on the mom and baby's health, some of these men are driving these women to madness. They sit and watch these women struggle with a newborn, while making them do housework and take care of the family (*side-eyeing Jordi). I had a friend who was in a center like this one in Switzerland for 2 mths, and her dumbass partner has not made her life easier since she's returned.
