Is REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE a Gay Movie?
Rebel Without a Cause is one of the iconic and enduring films ever made, leaving an indelible influence on everything from West Side Story to Elvis to George Lucas to David Bowie … not to mention Akira, Paula Abdul, and The Room. And behind the fast cars and tough talk, at Rebel’s heart is a tender friendship … that’s easy to read as a gay romance. And although censors and studio executives issued furious demands to cut anything queer, the filmmakers loaded the film with same-sex desire — drawing on elements from their own personal lives. Together, they created a blueprint of teenage angst — and longing — that shaped American culture for decades to come.

No part of this movie has "aged poorly" whatsoever. It's as poignant and timely today as it was then. And there were no "awful" lines. Jim was 100% right in what he said.

I think James's enduring appeal is that he has both strength and vulnerability in a child-like way, all while he smolders and really couldn't care less what you think. You can't look away from it and you feel for him instantly. The way he says that "just ONCE he wants to do something right" is so like a little kid trying to assert themselves in an adult space. I really appreciate the message of this film and that it was so progressive for the time. James definitely paved the way for all the smolder that came after him, and all the male vulnerability. Thanks for another one! 💗✨

Everything he did had the Gay (barely) undercurrents.

I haven't gotten to see this movie yet. It's always out at the library.
I'm watching/listening to you telling the character introductions and dang…… Jim's parents hate each other and you can tell he's stuck in the middle of them using him to make the other mad while grandma watches, it seems implied to me that Judy's father feels a certain way about her and is pushing her away because of it(her poor mother, Plato has been neglected and infantilized by being left with a nanny( a nanny?!) instead of them hiring someone who could actually raise a teenager or even sending him to boarding school.
These poor kids!

35:01 the X-Men reference makes sense when it comes to James Dean. One of my favorite biographies written about James Dean was titled, The Mutant King. 🫡

What I find odd about the Title.
Gay People are always seen as overzealous screaming Rebels without a Cause.
James Dean if Sexy and Cool had pictures in the Dictionary. James Dean and Marlon Brando would be there.

IMO, movies in the past were a lot better because they were never explicit about gay things. It could easily be interpreted as a gay relationship. It can also be interpreted as a straight relationship. It works both ways, the message resonates with all audiences. It doesn't pander to one group and it doesn't vilify the other.

I always got the gay vibe.
I didn't understand why he was screaming at his parents "you're tearing me apart". I think I would have been relieved that they weren't screaming at me for being drunk at the police stationLol

Bisexuality is different from homosexuality. Rebel Without a Cause is a movie about conflicted bisexual people because society does not accept them.

In the 1950s punk was an explicitly gay connotative slur

no, its not a gay movie. But yes, the bromance between James Deans character and Sal Mineos Character is close, intimate and fascinating. It seems that World War 2 had made America at large somewhat aware of the possibilities of male intimacy. Then, by the 1950's there could be coded references to this in movies, despite the overwhelming homophobia of the same period from the conservative mood of Eisenhower's government and McCarthyism.

This YouTuber mispronounced Jim Backus last name. The older I get, the more names of people I watched on television get mispronounced in my childhood. I’m surprised he didn’t add the clip of the father of Natalie Wood character after he slapped her after she kissed him. That would go down a whole other rabbit hole.

When I saw the photo of Alan Ladd in Plato's locker it reminded me of the pinups teenagers kept in their lockers in the 50s. He didn't have Marilyn Monroe. He had Alan Ladd.

Sal Mineo was gay and James Dean was whatever you wanted him to be. And be honest everyone becomes gay after they die.

When I saw this as a teen my first reaction was that he had plenty of cause to rebel. My family was so different, I thought the writers were nuts. Even the unhealthy families I knew were not this bad.

Great movie, Ed Platt, the "Chief" deserves some recognition, the only "adult" who cared to try and understand what the kids were going through. Didn't play the stereotypical asshole cop…

This film is the same as a clockwork orange story wise, except the adults in a clockwork orange really did give up on the youths completely in a British kind of way.

I don't think it was a coincidence that Plato shares the name of the gayest philosopher ever, who hailed from a time and place where the normative homosexual relationship happened within a mentor/student-dynamic.

I once assisted with a college production of "Come Back To The Five And Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean." I was a generation older than the college kids. Of course, the director and I suggested they watch "Giant." The cast planned an evening together to watch it. We asked how it went. They – though warned – thought the first 20 or 30 minutes so boring they gave up. Eventually, though, they did watch "Rebel Without A Cause." Their reaction: they didn't realize Hollywood made Homosexual movies in the 1950's. I'd seen the film many times – it's one of my sister's favorites. Well, yeah, I always got the "Alan Ladd business" and Plato's general demeanor. I just chalked it up to being part of Life. I don't know what that says about the film…or about me.
