SLACK! : NOSTALGIA

“Night Shift” by After Hours

Dave's Archives | July 5, 2026

Night Shift began with a simple image. A young man working alone in a Japanese convenience store long after midnight, watching strangers come and go while the city quietly sleeps.

At first, the song seems to be about the people who pass through his shift. The tired salaryman buying coffee. The student grabbing instant ramen. The taxi driver counting coins. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the convenience store is only the setting. The real story is about insomnia, routine, and finding a place where being awake no longer feels out of place.

Musically, this track continues the evolving sound of my original project, blending hypnotic bass lines, dark electronic textures, restrained guitars, and late night atmosphere into a cinematic alternative sound. Like the other songs in this collection, Night Shift explores ordinary places and the quiet lives that continue after everyone else has gone home.

Sometimes the night doesn’t belong to us. Sometimes we belong to the night.

I am saying this as someone who has sincerely watched your channel for years, who also makes music, who also loves retro aesthetics/concepts/history, this is not it. There's millions upon millions of tutorials out there to teach you how to create music like this. I don't think suno is the way to go by any means not only because it steals music from artists, it is made by someone who doesn't care about the craft, who doesn't care about the history of music and only sees it as a profit maker, rather than a tool for creativity and self expression. Hell I'll sit down with you and talk you through the steps to make things like this. But this is what has made me unsub from you. I as a musician cannot sit by and see my passion and savior in life be muddled by something made to devalue and demean it.
