    You are showing farm life.
It used to be common experience for the majority of the population to know farm life. Many animals (and plants) do not live long lives. Death IS known so appreciation of who does live is so much greater.
I'm a retired physician and the injury gave me great concern. I just waited on what judgement would be of the veterinarian. It didn't surprise me; but that doesn't lessen the sadness. I am truly sorry for your losses (enjoyment of the animal and the financial due to not being able later to harvest him).
I remember last year Abby dog was injured on the upper pasture. Is there a dangerous spot up there?

I think it's very humane to put him down after a little bit of suffering, rather than put him through all the pain and discomfort of trying to heal that kind of wound for the slim chance of a recovery. It's very sad he's gone so soon, but his quality of life while he was here was top notch.

Poor lil buddy. Sad to see it end for it like that. Have you ever considered getting a livestock trailer Morgan? Maybe that is something that can be of use in the future if you have to move livestock, like buying/selling or in this case when they are injured.

Give the pasture a good look when you’re up there. It looks like a stray coil of wire got wrapped around the leg somehow and he panicked – it got tight and sliced him and he probably freed himself during that panic. If there is a single nail in a pasture, your animal will find it and impale themselves on it sadly. 😵‍💫

I have been a nurse for 20 years and have seen "it all". When I saw that I thought, uh-oh that looks waaaaay bad. On an animal, that, isn't "fixable". So sorry for your loss. Ozzie was the best little calf, spunk, attitude, looks, he had it all. You couldn't have done anything different. Another farmer may have just put him down and not even bothered with the vet. Thankfully the vet was kind and reasonable.

Farm life is not sentimental. it's difficult even when rewarding. As a commenter says below, perhaps the calf's mother already sensed it was hopeless, and simply walked away to live her life. Most humans, including farmers, tend to do all they can to save an animal's life, but even the Vet knew it was hopeless. You did everything possible under the circumstances, Morgan. (RIP little furry Ozzy. Say hello to the human Ozzy.)

it is very obvious that you take your guardianship of your animals very seriously. So sorry you both had to go through this. I really enjoy all your animals! RIP Ozzy.

Sorry for your loss, Morgan. Ozzy was a cute calf, and would have been a great member of the herd, but it wasn't meant to be. Wounds like that on a baby animal just don't work out happily, but sadly. Again, sorry for your loss.

So sorry. Isn't it interesting how your mama cow knew that something was wrong? Had a newborn pup that I knew was in bad shape and I tried to save him but my momma dog she was a smart girl. She was my bestest girl. She knew something was wrong and kept pushing him away. Keep in mind this dog had large litters and was an excellent momma dog and would lick her sleeping pups off the teeth and wake the others to nurse! She knew before we did. Again, so sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry. You had big plans for this calf, and unfortunately, circumstances decided otherwise. If it helps ease the ache, you did everything that a reasonable owner could have done, and when a veterinarian gave you the truth of the situation, you handled the decision to let him go with reason and compassion. Please take consolation in that you gave the little guy a life, even a short one, filled with sunshine, grass, a mother nearby, companions and everything a responsible cattle owner could give their animals to ensure their overall wellbeing. Thank you for sharing this with your viewers, as it is an acknowledgement that there is always another side to the bucolic vision most people have of small farm life.
