Mosquitoes kill more people every year than any other animal on the planet. More than sharks. More than snakes. More than other humans. So when Google announced a plan to release 32 million of them across the United States, the internet lost its mind and honestly, fair. But the real story is far stranger, and far more interesting, than the headlines let on. Here’s everything you need to know before you decide where you stand.

I agree with the efforts to reduce populations of the disease spreading genera through releasing sterile males, but only to a certain extent. I dont think its good to wipe a species out for something thats not necessarily completely its fault. Yes the mosquitoes are spreading malaria, but that is not their intention and they can completly their lifecycle if the disease they spread didn't exist. So I think we should simply use the sterility plan on the places the mosquitoes are nonnative/invasive and wipe them out there completely because it would benefit local ecosystems. While also reducing the populations in there native ranges would be okay if its a means of controlling a population that is way higher than the ecosystem would normally support but not wipped out in its entirety. Though they are just a few species of genera of mosquitoes, it seems just as wrong to wipe out these species as it would be to wipe out animals like Nile Crocodiles who cause loads of human deaths a year. There are ways to prevent the harms and at least I think we should erradicate the disease, not the insect who is just living as its instincts and biology tells it to do so. It is how they are that the females need blood for nutrients for their offspring, and is it really a good thing to eliminate a species that would not have gone extinct otherwise?
I know this was a very long explaination, but my point is that I support the project to the extent that it erradicates the disease and the non native mosquito populations, but not the genera or individual species at large. Let me know what you think of the nuances of the project. I would love to hear any counterarguments or ideas surrouding my thoughts or the discussion at large!!

If u think for a second that this is done in the interest of human health ur totally duped and ur brain is poisoned. Itâs a sure fire way to completely annihilate a lot more species in the area than mosquitoes. They are a major food source in the food web.
Stop corporations from killing the planet.

Iâve been doing research over dragonflies and how they eat mosquitoes and flies and prevent diseases in livestock for two years now, and I am about to start implementing different things into farmers ecosystems to be able to attract dragonflies to prevent the diseases that vector such as mosquitoes and flies transmit. Iâve interviewed all the farmer in my area and 36% of them have lost livestock due to vectors. I plan to further this project and maybe one day be an aquatic entomologist I love your videos Lindsey tune in for every one!!! P.S. Iâm 16 and started this at 14 so this is my life.

I really don't like mosquitoes, they're the worst most challenging part of camping or being out in the wilderness. Playing god and totally getting rid of an entire species is wrong and won't turn out well. They're part of the cycle of life, part of the environment. Humans are so arrogant.

As much as I HATE mosquitoes
They are wildly important to the ecosystem. Just spray on some skin so soft and keep it moving guys. Let's stop trying to eradicate integral parts of the ecosystem.

@remilovely
June 30, 2026 at 2:38 am
people kill the most people, not animals, people and now these same people are funding such a project. I believe in science and that it probably works in this case but I don't trust the man who is funding it, at some point he will use it for his own benefit and, like oops, accidentally transmit some diseases. It is obvious that they are not interested in the betterment of man so I will not give them such weapons. Everything that is advertised to people in the end turns out to have a primary function in warfare, i.e. killing a large number of people. No thanks. And there is not just one solution, maybe find another one that is not funded by Bill Gates and the like.

Back in my day, Google was just a search engine. Now they're making genetically modified mosquitoes. Wild.
EDIT: I am now aware after watching the full video that they are NOT genetically modified. But still wild nonetheless. đ

Aedes aegypti is an invasive species that has no natural business in North America. So, I have no ethical problem with eliminating them. Release the sterile males!!
