Fourth of July festivities for America’s 250th Anniversary kick off in Elmwood Township

UpNorthLive | June 29, 2026

We’re now less than a week away from the Fourth of July and festivities are planned across Northern Michigan.

One community in Leelanau County got a jump start on that 250th celebration.

Elmwood Township celebrated America’s 250th Anniversary on Friday evening.

Drawing in community members of all ages to come together to mark the occasion.

“We’re here today because we want to do something for the township and for the residents of the township,” said Daniel Jenuwine, harbor master for Elmwood Marina.

Jenuwine said the main draw for this event is to get kids involved with the celebration.

“My passion for driving this thing was to bring back some patriotism into the hearts of kids,” Jenuwine said.

The event kicked off with a parade where kids led the way on their bikes, followed by local farmers riding tractors through town.

For some of the kids, the parade was the best part.

“Going around the block and doing the parade,” said one of the children at the celebration.
While others had a simpler message to share with the world.

“God bless America,” a child at the celebration said.
Others just want to give everyone a quick reminder of what this holiday is all about.

“250th birthday,” a child at the celebration said.
Beyond the parade, people enjoyed free hot dogs served fresh off the grill, followed by a performance by Traverse City band Knee Deep, who kept up the energy of the crowd with some classic rock songs.

In light of the historic anniversary, this event brought people together to celebrate the past as they look to the future.

“So, we bring back the history and the culture of the of the township, but we blend it with where we’re going in the next 50 years,” said Jenuwine.

Veterans were also given medals and honored for their service as part of tonight’s event.
