Battle Dome: The Failed American Gladiators Ripoff From 1999
Before Survivor changed reality TV forever, and after American Gladiators had already proved that people loved watching regular contestants get destroyed by larger-than-life athletes, television gave us one of the strangest competition shows of the late ’90s: Battle Dome.
Premiering in 1999, Battle Dome tried to combine the athletic spectacle of American Gladiators, the attitude of pro wrestling, the chaos of Jerry Springer-era television, and the extreme sports energy of the X Games into one loud syndicated package. It had amateur contestants, over-the-top “Warriors,” fake rivalries, championship belts, arena crowds, trash talk, and enough late-’90s attitude to fill an entire Spencer’s Gifts.
But despite having all the right ingredients for the era, Battle Dome disappeared almost as quickly as it arrived.
In this video, we’re looking back at the failed American Gladiators ripoff from 1999, why it felt so perfectly timed for the wrestling boom, how it crossed over with WCW, why the show never fully worked, and how one of its biggest stars — Terry Crews, then known as T-Money — used this forgotten syndicated fever dream as an early stepping stone into entertainment.
Was Battle Dome too fake to work as a sport? Too real to work as wrestling? Too late to copy American Gladiators? Or was it actually a little ahead of the reality TV wave that was about to take over everything?
Let me know in the comments: did you watch Battle Dome when it aired, or did this show disappear from your memory completely?
If you enjoy forgotten ’90s TV, failed competition shows, weird syndicated experiments, American Gladiators, WCW, pro wrestling history, and the strangest corners of late-’90s pop culture, make sure to like, subscribe, and stick around for more Dial-Up Days.

The best way I can describe Battle Dome's problem is through a dilemma in deckbuilding in Magic the Gathering. Be careful that you don't have your deck trying to do too many things, else it will end up doing none of them.

Never heard of it. I too invested in the wrestling wars.
Too bad it wasn't Lucha Underground.

Battle Dome failed because pro wrestling was way too big at that time and the fact that at least in my area it came on at a weird time IIRC it was Sundays at 9PM on UPN I did watch it every week lol.

First time seeing Terry crews T-Money!. I went to a few of those tapings. I was there at the one where the gentleman SNAPED his leg on that Merry-Go-Round wrestling takedown game. I was there right there in the front row, it was crazy. 😲🤯

Who to root for wasn't hard to figure out: If I liked a Warrior (that is to say, liked his gimmick), I rooted for him, and if I didn't like him, I rooted for the contestant.

I liked the show as a kid but two things i noticed even back then was that some warriors only did certain events like bubba king and other warriors like payne only appeared in a handfull of shows. I wonder if thats because they were getting injured doing multiple tapings in one go.

I had forgotten about this for most of my life. The only time I saw it was when I was little, either seven or eight, late at night, like 1 in the morning, and my uncle and I watched it after he was channel-surfing.

I remember the color guy originally was Scott Ferrall. A 90s loud, Jim Rome type sports radio host. I heard his show before and he had a good show. Then out of nowhere Ferrall was replaced by Ed Lover. Don’t know why.

the most 1990 show i can think of is rocket power really it feels so corporate. with how it feels like they really did just shove as much sports fads during the time yet some how it is enjoyable. the it is completely dated as a result there really is no way of removing it from the 1990.

I remember when it did a crossover with WCW. I heard none of the WCW wrestlers wanted to do it. And I think the story came and was forgotten in a month.

I watched the show on WWOR-TV in New York City. Great Memories.
Also, another failed Gladiators knock-off back in the 90’s that I remember were both The Grudge Match hosted by Jesse “The Body” Ventura and WMAC Masters (which is like Power Rangers meets Mortal Kombat but kid-friendly martial arts action).
