POP SONG REVIEW: “Janice STFU” by Drake

Todd in the Shadows | June 27, 2026

Drake is back, and angrier that a mad wet hen. Can he reclaim his throne as one of the GOATs, or does he suck too much as a person to ever reclaim his greatness?

Drake is kinda “too big to fail” as an artist. He just controls so much of the market share of the listening public that even his worst flops will blow everything around it out of the water. “Drake” might be gone, but his ghost lingers.

Each to his own I guess, but Drake's monotone, drowsy, delivery never did anything for me. At best its boring, at it's worst its downright annoyng.

This quote from Raphael Bob-Waksberg (creator of "Bojack Horseman") from his short story "More of the You That You Already Are" probably sums up most people's thoughts on Drake and his music/albums nowadays:

"What did you think of the new Drake album?"

    "BARF."

"Really? You used to love Drake. You don't like the new stuff?"

    "BARF."

"Wow. Strong reaction. Guess I should delete all the Drake songs off your phone. Guess you hate Drake now."

It's important to remember that before Drake was a rapper, he was a child actor who had a large female fanbase. I would argue that most of his initial success was drawn from that fanbase following him into music. It's why his initial public person was the "lover-boy" as he was his show's teenage heart throb.

Drake‘s response to A minor with the whole B sharp, major, etc. etc. are is the most embarrassing lyrics I have ever heard and I listened to the last Taylor Swift album.

The second time around watching this video, hearing the piano rendition in the beginning made me realise that the "BC baby" part sounds an awful lot like the "deep sea baby" part of I Follow Rivers by Lykke Li, so, filled with dread, I looked it up and found out that it is indeed interpolated from that song, which feels like sacrilege

You needed a video that would rack up the clicks so you made the easy choice to go back to the Drake well, even though this album landed with a thud and we all know the numbers are juiced. Its a tough game in these YouTube streets.

Unfortunately, the cancel culture isn't what we were promised.

But it did work against Dixie Chicks

I will do my part by continuing to ignore Drake. It won't affect anything other than my own listening habits, but I'm happy with that. I don't feel any need to keep up with what's new.

I really don't think it sunk in how dire the pre-beef Drake situation was until I remembered he wrote the lines "Basically I'm saying either way we 'bout to slide / Can't let this one slide" and put it on a single.

6 minutes in so far and we haven’t even actually discussed the song it’s just been a hate video essay on Drake

Trying to diss Kendrick for not being charitable enough while standing in front of $20 million worth of Ferraris. Yeah, that makes sense.
