i saw the fountain in 2014 i believe… it's a shame they have queues an you have to pay now. i remember waiting a couple minutes and fighting my 8 year old body through a crowd to get to the front to throw a coin in hahahaha…. and then we walked past it in the evening and next to no one was there and it was a beautiful serene sight.

They should have just given him an amusing costume and made it official, with half the take going to charity. Demeaning? Perhaps – but considering the enterprise in purely economic terms, plenty of gawpers don’t really want to see the 17th century fountain, they just want to tick it off their tourism list. But people would actively look forward to seeing the Troll of Trevi Fountain. It might well have swung the decision of time strapped tourists looking at their guide book and deciding what to fit into their Roman holiday, especially tourists with kids. “But mummy, the art gallery sounds boooring – I want to see the troll!” Might’ve ended up a local institution. At that point we’ve got the prospect of setting up an Official Trevi Fountain Souvenir Stand nearby selling keychains and plush toys of the funny troll man. Oooh, ‘Take a photo with the Trevi Troll: Only 10 euros!”. That’s online marketing right there, not merely free but profitable. What else? Hmm… ‘Troll Burgers’? No wait, scratch that one.
