17:55 I found ScreenZen a little while ago, and I really like it! I think the mindful pause thing is really good, it forces delayed gratification, and as you said, makes you question whether or not it’s worth opening. You could just change the restrictions on an app, but that also has a bit of friction because you have to open the app and go through all the settings

Here are some suggestions on what you Can do on your dopamine-detox: go for a walk, hang out with and talk to friends family and/or loved-ones (or even just aquaintences!), explore the real-world, White-river rafting (if you Can get there, and dont worry about the technicality of doing it, watching your car-screen is fine for practical-purposes Only!), its not dopamin, but seretonin! Dopaminenis the reward.chemical that gets you addicted, seretonin is the satisfaction chemical that makes you satisfied (not really, its way more complex than just 1 chemical neuro-scientifically speaking, but theese are the associations the internet has litches into, the same Way that dopamin is the reqard-chemical)!

I know this video is old, but i just wanted to say i really appreciate you telling us about screen zen. I’ve been using it for over a year (437 day streak!) because of this video, and its been incredibly helpful in dealing with my depression and insomnia. I’m very grateful that you aren’t afraid to tell us when a product is good, whether or not you are sponsored by it. Your videos have a done a lot of good in my life and the lives of your audience. Thank you Drew.

I got Effecto to help with my ADHD. Monthly fee to even see what’s available in the app. I think, sure, whatever, if it helps I’ll try anything at this point. Get in. Content not helpful for me. Forget to cancel because of said ADHD. Finally remember to cancel after paying for it for 3 months. How to cancel? Send an email. Get a response but forget to check email because of said ADHD. Check back after a couple of weeks. “So, just to confirm, do you want to cancel?” Followed by “this ticket has been closed due to inactivity.” Continue charging me money. Long story short I paid for it for 6 months and used it exactly twice

17:52 I’ve used ScreenZen for a little over a year now because of this video, 3 unlocks a day, 10 minutes each. It’s great for my social media cause it’s enough for me to “stay updated” with friends or pop culture on social media, but not to fall down a depressing doom scroll that puts me in a bad mood that day. Thanks Drew.

drew i hope you know this video actually changed my life, i downloaded screenzen and it genuinely took my average social media time from like 14 hours a day to like, 30 minutes. half the time when i open the app i realize im just doing it on reflex and i just close out of it. im SO much less angry all the time, and my obsessive-compulsive symptoms have gotten way better because im not constantly exposed to guilt tripping and ragebaiting. thank you tammy.

Love you Drew, but I hate weekly releases, by the time the next episode comes out I have little memory of or interest in the show.

I'm fine if a service wants to release on that model if they'd at least remind the rest of us that the show exists once it's all released, but no, they're focused on advertising the next show that they'll cancel before the story ends.

I have to say tho I have ADHD and did the inflow free trial and it was really helpful 🙏 hate that they charge you and that I had to cancel it but it was great for a week

Wait but the box is a good idea, just don’t buy the product. Use a box you already have or get one for a couple dollars and just put your phone in that box. Same product but so much cheaper

I really don’t understand how this guy and Danny G get guaranteed millions of views for every single upload. The only other person I know of this happens to is cr1tikal and he has over 10 million subs.

These guys have way fewer subs yet get the same amount of views. I’ve always wondered why, especially for Danny since his videos aren’t good a lot of the time and definitely don’t deserve that many.

    It’s unique, bizarre and sketchy.

i definitely have an issue with youtube and you could also maybe argue the same with discord (even though i always have it in the background just to stay connected to friends) but im glad i dont ever find myself addicted to places like twitter or even instagram, snapchat, etc. the closest i get is pinterest but i never feel addicted to it. i usually use it to find something or scroll for a bit and then im done after like 20 minutes. but man i give full respect to people who are able to just cut out social media so easily in their lives and such. one of my coworkers got a flipphone cuz all she wanted was a phone to text and call people on and while i could never make that switch, im happy for her

also for wellness apps, as someone who literally has ADHD, i just use Finch. Finch literally provides everything i need to feel productive and stay on track and it's fun. I'm almost to my 1,000 adventure and have a like 600 something check in streak

What forced me to reconsider my phone time was being sent to the inpatient mental health floor of my local hospital several times. The first time was 2021 and there was basically no alloted screen time. Your phone was locked up with your stuff and to look at it at all required begging your nurse (most of the ones working hated that you needed anything and were so annoyed that we had basically no autonomy other then wandering the halls for hours because we couldn't be trusted to be safe. In two weeks I met maybe 2 nurses who were genuinly nice to me.) To let you find like a phone number or something to call on the hospital phones on the wall. And they wouldnt let you look at it too long so it was very brief. (My next visit if you got to a certain level of trust by your psychiatrist you could participate in a group where you could use your phone and that was nice cause than you can do banking and stuff for a short period of time but than there was a covid outbreak and we were quarantined in our rooms so we got to use our phones until they died or until like nine pm but you still had to get your nurse who was annoyed at you for making them do anything to get it or plug it in.

I still use my phone a lot but it definitely made me reconsider my screen time. Since than ive been trying to intentionally do things to decrease my phone screen time. Ive stopped going on social media basically entirely mostly because I would go on Instagram and go on reels and it was all families from Palestine or Gaza saying that if I dont like and copy the link to the video to help their family that I dont care about them and think they should die. And I do care and don't want them to die so I would interact. Than my algorithm would reccomend me more of similar videos of families showing real struggles and saying I needed fo interact otherwise I hate them and think they should die cause i dont care but I do care so I would interact and it would reccomend me more until my whole feed was these videos and it was so distressing for me because it was all I could think about on the app than it was in my main insta feed than YouTube shorts. So I basically just started avoiding both because there's other ways to show I care.

With reels and shorts out of the picture I was still scrolling Instagram a lot until I realized it doesnt really matter. So I stopped doing that.

Because im not doing it forever now I only look at a few posts on Instagram a few times a month and mostly just talk with friends.

YouTube I started focusing on long form content and ive been doing this for a year now and ive found creators that can hold that attention better and it feels good to be able to interact with hour long deep dives into things and feel accomplished but also sad for the people that cant (in my one first year university course this one girl said she didn't watch one documentary for the class because she saw it was over an hour long and just didnt bother because she cant focus for that long.) I used to just watch vine and TikTok compilations for hours but now I mostly watch YouTube. But now most YouTube content isnt that interesting so im focusing on movies and shows. Recently ive started playing games with just the game (immersive ones like rdr2 and Zelda totk) and ive found you get so much more out of it because you feel more a part of the world and appreciate it more.

Im not perfect. Most of the time I see a youtube short I like and ill watch a couple but I rarely doomscroll now and most of the time I can stop myself. I couldn't do that before.

Basically you can rewire your brain by replacing a habit with another. It is possible to rework the dopamine addiction. I share this to give hope. Best of luck out there yall

I know I'm very late to the party with this comment. But on the off chance someone reads this and it helps them: you can start a trial for an app and then immediately cancel it. You still get the full trial period in this case but you won't enter into the paid version automatically.
