A gray kind of day at the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska. Mist hanging low, fog slipping in and out, rain thinking about it but never quite committing. Cold enough to keep you awake but not quite enough to send you home. The glacier just sat there to our backs, indifferent. Josh seemed quite used to it. Just stepped into a performance like any other room.

We were up there for the Alaska Folk Festival, which feels less like an event and more like a huddle. People finding each other in a place that makes you do that. Same instinct you see in colder towns where the weather outlasts you and the only answer is to go inside because there’s not much else to do in the early springtime dark.

The song leans into that contradiction. Wanting closeness but keeping one foot out the door. Making a life out of small trades. Attention for honesty. Time for time. Nothing promised beyond what can be carried that day.

By nightfall we all folded back into hotels rooms that came alive with music, damp coats, warm air, seeing some of the same faces again, and nobody was in a hurry to prove anything. Passing time, passing songs, because there’s not much else to do and nowhere else to be but together for a while.
