This is the story of a man who lived two very different lives.
A former rockstar who traded world tours for high-security labs. A brilliant mind working on advanced technology, classified projects, and ideas that pushed the limits of physics. But it’s also the story of a frantic 911 call… and a disappearance that lasted four years.
This is the mystery of Philip Taylor Kramer.
On February 12th, 1995, a 911 operator in Los Angeles received a call from a panicked man. He identified himself as Philip Kramer. His voice was strained. He made a chilling statement, and then the line went dead. It was the last confirmed contact anyone ever had with him.
Kramer wasn’t just anyone. In the 1970s, he was the bassist for the rock band Iron Butterfly. After leaving music, he reinvented himself as an engineer, eventually working as a contractor tied to U.S. defense projects. Some reports suggest his work was connected to advanced missile systems.
By the 1990s, he had shifted again—this time into tech. As co-founder and CTO of Total Multimedia, Kramer worked on early video compression and facial recognition technology. According to his wife, he also believed he had made a breakthrough in faster-than-light communication—an idea far outside accepted science, but one he was convinced was real.
At the same time, his company was spiraling. Financial stress, internal conflict, and increasingly strange influences—like executives embracing New Age beliefs and even bringing in a shaman—created chaos behind the scenes.
In the days leading up to his disappearance, Kramer was under intense pressure. He hadn’t slept properly in nearly two weeks. He told his wife people might be after him. He warned a friend, “We have to be careful.”
The morning he vanished, Kramer made 17 phone calls. He called his wife, promising a “big surprise,” but sounding off. He called his former bandmate, saying, “I love you more than life itself.” Then came the 911 call.
And then… nothing.
No bank activity. No confirmed sightings. A 6-foot-5 man in a green minivan had seemingly vanished from one of the busiest regions in the country.
For four years, his family searched relentlessly. His case was featured on Unsolved Mysteries. Tips came in from across North America—but none led anywhere. His father believed the 911 call was not what it seemed, insisting it was a coded message.
Then, in 1999, everything changed.
Two photographers hiking in Decker Canyon near Malibu discovered a wrecked green minivan hundreds of feet below a cliff. Inside were human remains. Dental records confirmed it was Kramer.
Investigators concluded the vehicle had plunged off the canyon road years earlier. The cause of death was blunt force trauma. But how it happened remained unclear. The official ruling: undetermined.
Authorities leaned toward a mental health crisis. The evidence—his stress, lack of sleep, and final calls—points in that direction.
But others aren’t convinced.
Kramer’s work in defense, his claims of major breakthroughs, and his growing paranoia have fueled another theory: that he was targeted. That his disappearance—and death—were not accidental.
In the end, the facts tell us where he was found. But not why he ended up there.
Was Philip Taylor Kramer unraveling under pressure… or was he pulled into something far more dangerous?

I read The Celestine Prophecy when it was published. It's fiction written as if it were fact. It's a fun and easy read, but in the end it's just a story.

It's up to 12 or 13 scientists missing or killed now. With all the people that snuck into the country illegally, it could very easily be a foreign agent

I had a patient that was awake for 4 days. He came in dehydrated & he was also hallucinating & was talking to tress when he was found outside in just his underwear in very cold weather. I lie your shirt. I saw ZZ Top in 1996 or so. I didn't want to go b/c I only knew the 2 songs they played on MTV. I don't drink so I am always the designated driver so people would buy my ticket. I was in the 4th row & holy smokes. Billy Gibbons just blew me away.

For the record, Phil Kramer was not in the legendary In A Gadda Da Vidda lineup , and it showed the video to that on Unsolved Mysteries , he didn't come around until the 70s when they were falling apart. Please excuse this comment, I made it before I saw that part where he says that

Single speed CD-ROM drives could only transfer data at 150KBps. Compressing video for single speed CD-ROM drives was a fantastic way to see your beautiful animations that your computer spent a month rendering get decimated beyond recognition. Only low resolution video with pixelated compression artifacts could stream on a single speed CD-ROM drive. I'm talking reducing the output resolution to 160×120 pixels and trying every compression method (cinepak, qt, etc.)…
I vaguely remember hearing about Total Multimedia. I definitely remember fractal compression. Fractals were big back then, especially in the Bay Area with a lot of the multimedia cyberart/tech VR pioneer crowd that was also into the original burning man scene, Terrence McKenna, Mondo 2000, Boing Boing, etc. Man, what a time that was.
"claimed" … "full motion video from a single speed CD-ROM." Yeah… no. Well, I suppose they could "claim" they developed it, but where was/is it? Oh, they filed for bankruptcy.

I had a very close friend who took his life after being sleep deprived. He had zero history of mental illness, and was literally the last person on Earth I ever thought would do that. After going a week with no sleep, he became irrational, and made his decision based on the delusions that he was having at the time. I was always left wondering how it could have happened. That is likely what happened here. It was just an unfortunate end to a brilliant life.

Here's the answer to the mystery: he had a psychotic break after probably an extended period of paranoid schizophrenia. It's all there from his "I've discovered a solution so simple, no one else has seen it." to him telling his father people are out to get him. It is very sad, but also not uncommon in people of roughly his age and especially with his intelligence.

I'm of the opinion that something within finally said "enough", which prompted him to go out driving on that fateful day/night. I believe he was of unsound mind at the time and that his crash was not done on purpose.

This whole thing is really fascinating. But even though it's still a mystery how he died, I'm relieved for his family that he was found. That had to be a huge weight lifted off their shoulders 😢

The 10 scientists in question didn't all go missing; some did, some were murdered, some killed themselves, all over the course of several years. There is no conspiracy story here, just 10 random people with the same line of work who had something bad happen to them. You could check any other occupation and also find, throughout the country, 10 people who have gone missing, were murdered, or killed themselves, over the course of a couple of years. People just love hearing a good mystery story, and if there isn't one, they'll make one up.
As for Kramer, he killed himself. All of the evidence points to it. I know it's hard for the family to accept it, but it's the most obvious answer. They didn't know what was going on in his mind; let's face it, how many times do we all pretend to be fine when we're really suffering? People who are suicidal often don't "act suicidal", which is why it almost always comes as a shock. One day they're laughing with friends, the next they've taken their own life. RIP Philip, my condolences to his loved ones.

One or two scientists go missing. I guess it would be weird. But to have 10 of them??? Something is up
