SLACK! : NOSTALGIA

THE LOST BOYS THE DARK AFTERLIFE OF AN ’80s CLASSIC

Dial-Up Days | June 15, 2026

The Lost Boys is one of the coolest vampire movies of the 1980s โ€” motorcycles, boardwalk lights, leather jackets, comic books, โ€œCry Little Sister,โ€ and one of the most unforgettable saxophone performances ever committed to film.

But watching it now feels different.

Released in 1987, The Lost Boys helped reinvent vampires for a new generation. They were no longer just old-world monsters in castles. They were young, stylish, dangerous, and impossible to look away from. But behind the movieโ€™s neon-lit Santa Carla fantasy is a darker real-life story about fame, Hollywood, child stardom, and the complicated afterlife of the cast who made the film immortal.

In this video, we look back at how The Lost Boys became an โ€™80s classic, from Joel Schumacherโ€™s MTV-style direction and the Santa Cruz boardwalk setting to Kiefer Sutherlandโ€™s iconic performance as David, Corey Haim and Corey Feldmanโ€™s rise as โ€œThe Two Coreys,โ€ and the real-life struggles that make the movie hit differently today.

Because The Lost Boys was a movie about staying young forever. But real life had other plans.

When did you first see The Lost Boys? Were you there for the vampires, the Frog Brothers, the soundtrack, or just the whole weird Santa Carla vibe? Let me know in the comments.

If you enjoy nostalgic deep dives into the movies, shows, and moments that raised us, be sure to like, subscribe, and stick around for more Dial-Up Dayz.

The set-design is one of my favorite things about this film. Every time, I notice something new from the comic book and video stores – Just now, I noticed that awesome VHS poster for the 1959 Hammer Mummy film, in the comic book store. All of those Warner Clamshell VHS in the video store hit pretty hard too. The DC comics titles are the most stand-out in the comic book store, which is cool, considering that Joel would do two Batman movies, but then I noticed the entire row of X-Men comics. Good stuff.

I remember as a kid watching American Gladiators and seeing Billy Wirth not only as a contestant. But as that seasons winner. BTW another future video on American Gladiators?

Also Wirth was in this good Tales from the Crypt episode where heโ€™s a lumberjack with Brion James.
