Since the illegal U.S. abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and First Combatant Cilia Flores, Global North commentators have rushed to declare the Bolivarian Revolution betrayed or defeated. The recent extradition of Alex Saab has only intensified these accusations.
In this episode, Chavista intellectuals Cira Pascual and Chris Gilbert discuss Venezuela’s new reality and the tendency of Global North observers to interpret the Bolivarian process through abstract ideological schemas rather than its concrete historical development.

Cira Pascual Marquina is a popular educator at the Pluriversidad, El Panal Commune’s educational initiative in the working-class barrio of 23 de Enero in Caracas. She is also a founder and member of the Communal Democracy Network.
Chris Gilbert is a professor of political studies at the Universidad Bolivariana de Venezuela, contributing editor at Monthly Review magazine, and the author of Commune or Nothing!: Venezuela’s Communal Movement and Its Socialist Project (Monthly Review, 2023), among other books and articles.
Gilbert and Pascual Marquina are the creators and hosts of Escuela de Cuadros, a Marxist educational television program and podcast. They are coauthors of Venezuela, the Present as Struggle: Voices from the Bolivarian Revolution (Monthly Review, 2020) and the book series Resistencia comunal frente al bloqueo imperialista (Observatorio Venezolano Antibloqueo, 2021–2026).

It's like a situation that Ireland's independence struggle and the construction of a sovereign government was experiencing in the aftermath of the War Of Independence during the 1918-22 revolutionary Irish Republic, the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed at the barrel of millions of British rifles and the threat of a full-scale invasion by the British Army was a reality and serious consideration faced by all factions be they pro or anti-Treaty and leaders like De Valera being thrown in cells by the Empire they were fighting for liberation from. It's pretty much a similar situation, Venezuela having their President and other members of the government kidnapped and the people terrorized and attacked, and the opposition is similar to British Loyalists in the occupied 6 counties in the North, both in terms of being a compradore reactionary bourgeoisie and backed by the largest imperialst power(s) in open and covert ways (Loyalist terrorist death squad paramilitaries meeting with and getting funding from the British Prime Ministers both before the Troubles and during, which is the Irish equivalent of the fascist terrorist death squads backed by the US and being given the five-star treatment in the White House). It's hard to comprehend the totality of imperialism, particularly American imperialism since it became the unipolar hegemon. The British Empire's strategy in the Republic of Ireland (the 1919 Declaration of Independence of Ireland and its Democratic Program of the Irish Republic has a lot of great surprises contained withn and is popular and socialist in character, a revolutionary document much like the Bolivarian Constitution) and occupied North in the 1920s-90's is quite similar to that of the United States Empire's strategy in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela since the Bolivarian Revolution
