Greetings all. Hopefully this came across as more of a general crashout than a specific defaming of Gracie Abrams, cause that’s kinda how I read it tbh. I have complicated feelings about this song, my enjoyment of it, and its context in the greater pop landscape. A generous interpretation would just be that it’s a fun, dumb, catchy song — but unfortunately, I think there’s a bit more to it than that.

music review gracie abrams that’s so true thats so true the secret of us video essay live reaction why worst favorite

I shamelessly love Gracie Abrams's music because I'm a guy and therefore can't relate to any of the lyrics anyway LoL But seriously tho, her vocal melodies are so euphoric!

My biggest issue with her music is that none of it feels authentic, it feels hollow and commercialized. It seems as though she is doing it for money and fame and because she can (She has resources most people don't). Ladies im begging you if you like pop musicians who actually have some sort of connection to their music and the songs themselves don't feel hollow listen to mitski. Seriously I cannot stress mitski enough, she is so unabashedly herself and she sounds amazing, both live and recorded. Listen to music with meaning made by people who actually love music. NOT nepo babies that make music because they can. Other pop stars that i recommend that have impeccable song writing skills: Weyes blood, Faye webster, Clairo, adrianne lenker, Ravyn lenae, god even lana del rey

“What she do to get you off” is such a deeply irritating line to me that I swipe away every time I meet a TikTok using it, and thus have never heard the full song

we as a society lack metaphysical song reviews like this one. the song is shitty, ikr?! i don't want to listen how it's a chat-gptish version of taylor swift, boygenious and a dozen other artists. i just want to know that hearing the song makes someone else feel physically ill too

First time I heard one of her songs genuinely thought it was Taylor Swift but even Taylor(tho I'm not a fan) has made music I could acctully listen to for the most part I then heard a recording where she was very off key and I get it when your on stage it happens but it plays in my head every week and idk I just never liked her never liked her music and never liked her aesthetic really either

I heard that one bit about made it out alive and saw the edits and I genuinely thought maybe this will be an interesting song. Turns out she just mad about some guy that did something?

I didn’t know Bill gates daughter had a podcast haha. I looked at her insta and saw a post that said went from college roommates to announcing our company on TV. Like your Bill Gates daughter?!?! It is not the flex you think it is. Nepo babies have such a hard time excepting that their fame and come up will always be directly linked to their family.

Luckily, since English is my third language, I can turn off my brain at the lyrics and pretend I'm just too dumb to understand them lmao

what confuses me so much about gracie abrams is that i don’t even know what makes people like her music. most of her songs aren’t interesting sonically, they’re the type of songs that rely on lyrics to make an impact, but her lyricism is subpar, and she’s not even a good vocalist, imo. there’s nothing that draws me to her music besides the commercial catchiness of some of her recent songs.

This video essay was both incoherrent and somehow understandable at the same time. There are words that are being said that I would never think to arrange together and yet this man communicates to me as if he were in my brain and touching my neurons individually.

i get where you’re coming from but the song isnt catchy enough it pretty forgettable and excruciating average sounding its funny cuz i can recognize a gracie abrams song because all her music sounds generic its almost a new genre

I think Gracie Abrams is successful because of her nepotiz and now she has people writing catchy licks for her. Her writing is atrocious and it kills me that everyone thinks she’s a new taylor swift. I don’t think taylor does much with her songs, they’re all the same chord progressions, but her lyrics are actually good (not her new album, don’t get me started) and she tells a nice little story every time. But my god, Gracie and her music means absolutely nothing. I feel like Oscar martinez in the Office, “part of me wants to try and analyze it… but I know there’s no content.” I’ve tried to wrap my head around her lyrics and they are tripe. It’s as if someone wrote a song only using idioms, and it’s catchy. I also love it while hating it.

I think you need to make a video on the best endings of songs, people always make videos on the openings to songs but not as much as endings. One that comes to mind is lightning crashes by live, the song starts very slow and then ends in grand fashion, would love to see what you come up with!

do i hate gracie abrams music? no. do i think she has a bad voice? no. do i think her songs lack meaning or any depth? no.
do I not like gracie abrams due to her past actions of being a creep to a 14 year old and some other things that gave me weird vibes and feelings? YES!

i think that’s why i don’t go to gracie’s new music. i love her older stuff, especially from “what it feels like” but this new album just isnt what her music used to be

i truly do not believe a satirical, lighthearted and playful song like thats so true is not a great way to judge her lyricism and writing ability! please do check out her ep this is what it feels like with tracks like camden, older and painkillersjust to name a few from that record. or from her album good riddance please check out, fault line, full machine and this is what the drugs are for, and to be quite frank the whole good riddance record is truly a greatly written indie pop album <3

The lyrics are just generic cliche things most women say about their ex boyfriend after a breakup that often make no sense, and certainly don’t create any coherent narrative when placed together in the song, yet it’s still just so catchy.

The song is very much like a most of her father’s movies. Designed to look (sound) good and provide surface level dopamine hit entertainment, but ultimately hollow with no meaning or purpose.

I didn't really like anything of hers and thought it was very shallow until I watched some of the music videos and they changed my opinion of her… She's definitely not one of my favorites, but I can appreciate aspects of her music. She does genuinely have a good voice, her song structures are fairly unique, and I like how some of her songs allow her to be the villain, which I feel is rare.
