The bedroom towards the end WAS actually better!!! I’d say the one with the living room looks nice too (outside the choice of brown, I would have chose a different accent color) Even the fireplace looked nice.

They didn’t say protect the fire place- they said don’t even TOUCH it. Don’t do anything implies not touching it. To me, it’s like saying ‘okay! Don’t put pink icing in the cake, and only keep it one tier’ and they give you a three entire cake with pink coloring.

The patrician lady specifically said she doesn’t like patricians, before the renovation started. That designer had a knack for using the homeowners distastes against them.

Hildi definitely had some kind of personality disorder that compelled her to create the exact opposite of what the homeowners want.

Why are American houses made out of paper and why do they look worse than homeless tents in Europe and East Asia? I know Americans are too poor to build homes the way they’re built in the rest of the world — with steel, concrete, and brick — but come on, guys. Walls made out of paper? Seriously?

The show the first time around was a 'new and fresh' angle on home renos at the time, so got decent viewing, but the so called 'professional' designers who worked with and guided the sets of neighbours usually had really crappy ideas, and at best the choices they made were easily undone, maybe requiring repainting a room or two at most. At worst? They essentially destroyed favored possessions at times – there seemed to be a lot of people actually SPRAY-PAINTING furniture or stripping it and painting it with just regular paint, hiding beautiful wood grain under weird color choice paint meant for walls. You won't see furniture stores selling furniture painted these ways for a reason – the way furniture is used does not lend itself well to those sorts of color applications. Furniture is treated in stains or paints designed to soak into the wood, then probably given a transparent sealing for hardness.

I was on the UK version as a kid and my mum hated the room to the point she made one of the designers cry. She asked for a family centric bed room and they instead gave her a breakaway space with clear plastic sheets with bamboo painted on them to escape us. Needless to say it was gone within a week

The fireplace one is actually atrocious Gabi what are you talking about? Cold white walls only broken up by dookie brown tile? The most charitable thing I could say about it is that it could pass as Willy Wonka's BDSM chamber, and no, not Gene Wilder Willy Wonka.

20:20 about the painted ceilings , and she said it was kind of egyptian looking as she said she had to get used to it..why is she a hypocrite? She said she didn't WANT to paint the ceilings… sounds like the Hildi chick IN CHARGE OF THE SHOW decided to do that

We had that show in the Netherlands as well. Every episode was the same: one home made beautiful, the other ugly. Every single episode was exactly the same. And people still got surprised about the worse design that they got.

The people doing the beautiful renovating always think their house is going to be just as amazing as that. Nooooooooo if you are doing the nice house, you will get the most hideous makeover. Why didn't people get that after years of episodes like that?

I feel so f***ing old. I’ve not only seen every episode of this show and am keenly aware of its place in the zeitgeist of the early aughts, but I watched renovation reality shows since they were a thing, where my very first exposure to this genre being my contractor stepdad’s favourite television show that my mom recorded for him: “Bob Vila’s Home Again”, which I remember watching not long before my mom and him had their daughter in 1993.

I was born in ‘83, and I would be allowed to watch “The Learning Channel” for 30-60 minutes in the morning during breakfast in the summer months off of school. If you think “that channel sounds familiar”, you should. It was an educational channel that was initially funded specifically to educate children through targeted programming, where they weren’t watching commercials every 5-7 minutes, unlike network channels.

It was also regional. I grew up in Canada, but we were so close to the border, so we saw some American programming for the north east that the rest of the USA wasn’t even aware of. The Learning Channel changed hands, became “TLC” and was the birthplace for a lot of reality programming that other channels picked up and ran with.

Its nascent years gave us property flipping shows, reality shows like “A Baby Story”, where heavily pregnant women were interviewed, filmed and the camera crew followed the family leading up to, during and after the birth. Wedding shows, and then shows like “10 Years Younger” where they would stand the candidate in a plexiglass box in a busy city and ask people walking by how old she is and what needs improvement. They give her a makeover and repeat the exercise. It was wild, y’all!!

So seeing Paige pop up on YouTube and hearing that there are many people who have never even heard of the show, makes me cry a little on the inside for my lost youth! 😂

"I found this show" You're so young lol. I loved Trading Spaces. I was excited when came back for a bit, I always wanted to do it. A lot of homeowners have been honest if disappointed, or at least didn't like certain features.
Hildi was always my fave, I love the unique and weird stuff. Didn't like the basic boring beige looking rooms.
I do like the white brick on the 2nd room (don't know if that was a before or after feature) but yeah, not the rest.
I will be honest though, even though I saw maybe 2 or 3 episodes of the new show (was too busy to keep up with it) most of the show I haven't watched since I was maybe a teen, so I'm sure my taste in interior design has changed a lot.
I need to find some old episodes here on youtube and compare how teen me felt about some of these designs vs how 37 year old me feels.

Lol sorry that game you advertised is worse for the eyes than anything.
The couple talking about the headboard design…I wonder if they chose to do the show because they were butting heads trying to design stuff on their own?
The ceilings made out of hay would actually be cool if they were sealed properly (unsealed makes it a no when you have pets) but yeah, no, not the pink ceiling. Maybe black or a hot pink, even. But I hate that shade of pink, in general.

Oh, looking at before and after is so much nicer on youtube when I can pause and really look at everything! When it aired back in the day I couldn't do that.

Ok, I def never liked Hildi's beach room lol
Always thought it looked more like a clown room/circus. Maybe if it was horror clowns….

With the hay room, the other couple — specifically the wife — tried to push back very hard on the straw. She said she really wasn’t comfortable doing that and they basically brainwashed her to do it. It’s why when she walks and the red shirt says, “This is what will happen all day!” And she pulls a piece of straw off the wall, the neighbor says, “I know. I know” and makes that face at her friend.

Normal Reality TV: "Let's create a situation where we script out every reaction, and overdramatize everything."
Trading Spaces: "Let's let neighbours f k up each other's houses and film their reaction."

    Brilliant executive decision.

To be fair the blue room wasn't nearly as bad as the "prince" room 🥲 it's camp but not too much. Basic camp if you will. If they love blue it's good! There is nothing good I can say about the "prince" room
