Why The King Of Limbs Is Radiohead’s Most Misunderstood Album

The King of Limbs is without question Radiohead’s most divisive album. In early 2011, Radiohead dropped The King Of Limbs with almost no warning; a short, looping, rhythm-driven album that left many longtime fans confused and disappointed. They either love it or hate it. Today we deep dive into the album’s quiet, experimental creation, from sporadic sessions to its stealth release and unconventional promotion. We’ll explore the dense, immersive textures of tracks like “Bloom,” “Lotus Flower,” and “Codex,” the divided critical and fan reception that placed it at the bottom of many rankings, and why the record rewards patient, headphones-on listening more than any other in Radiohead’s catalog.

As someone that used to prefer experimental and un-conventional things, i always loved The King of Limbs. On the contrary, i didn't like In Rainbows, that much, although i've be appreciating it a lot more, lately.
From the unique Bloom start, saying "open your mouth wide", letting you inside that planet… to the ending, that says "wake me up", and suggests this all might just be a dream, i've always felt immersed into that surreal and rythmical work of art. And with the phrase "if you think this is over, then you're wrong", and this being the last album for so many years, it let me questioning "isn't this really over? And if it is, does it means, that even if the band is over, all the things in their music are really beyond the music? Or does it mean that there is more dream after waking up?". IDK, that's the kind of feeling this album provoqued in me.
Luckily, we did have A Moon Shaped Pool after that, 'cause it's so good.

this video feels more like an abridged wikipedia article, mixed with a couple opinions and sponsorships // substack plugs. i kinda wish you went deeper or had something more interesting to say

I remember during that time dubstep was huge. I was on certain websites at the time that labeled the album as dubstep for whatever reason. I think even the wikipedia article had it as such. I saw it as "post-dubstep" somewhere

Noel Gallagher set it best when it comes to Thom Yorke – he could shit in a light bulb and the critics would love it

I love the album. It's obvious why it polarized or is on the bottom of many fans rankings of the best radiohead. It's not Ok Computer 2.0, Kid A 2.0, or In Rainbows 2.0.

Because it has many loops, is very repetitive, and the percussion practically drowns out the electronic elements, I don't think the album is as complex as people say. It may be subtle, but it's too subtle.

I promise… if you watch & listen to Radiohead's TKOL "From the Basement" you will have a better understanding of this album. During COVID, it helped me to ❤ The King of Limbs all the more!

I wonder if the b-sides from TKOL and AMSP are the secret album too (Harry Patch, Twisted Words, Staircase, Daily Mail, Butcher, Supercollider, Ill Wind, and Spectre)! It’s 8 tracks, 4 “sides (released kinda 2 at a time), and the same length of 38 minutes! Also, for sure Wall of Eyes is related as it’s also 8 tracks and has lyrics found in the Newspapers editions

You can stare at a concrete wall long enough and you'll start finding patterns and rationalizing a sense of art within it if you wanted to. Doesn't make it an unappreciated masterpiece

Oh my god. I started listening to Radiohead less then a year ago and I started from the bends, ok computer really analysing everything about them. And this album… when I first listened to it I felt like it’s something that huge and powerful that I can’t swallow it in one bite. But after like 3 months i went to the forest and put this album and became an absolute fan. Codex, Bloom, Separator(of course) are like a colourful dreams with no ending but with a hint that it will end. And it’s really another world that contains every other album of their imho. Cause it was going not from inside but from outside, like they took NATURE and just let it sound through their voices and instrument. I love this album

You gotta add "Staircase", "The Butcher", "Supercollider" and "The Daily Mail" back into this record to complete it. "IF U THINK THIS IS OVER THEN YER WRONG".

To me "King of Limbs" is the sequel to Kid A, and "Wall of Eyes (Wall of Ice)" completes the trilogy.

I was 16 when OK Computer came out, and I had Pablo Honey on tape around the same time but didn't listen to either that much. Years passed, and I kind of understood Radiohead was the next Pink Floyd from the bits I heard, but again I didn't pay that much attention.
Then, when living in the Netherlands in 2011, I downloaded (legally) In Rainbows and TKOL, and I have never looked back. I went deep down the Radiohead rabbit hole and I still haven't emerged. I think TKOL is a fabulous album.

I've loved TKOL from the morning it came out. Amazing album. The "from the basement" recordings are even better

Определенно один из лучших альбомов. Чтоб его понять достаточно посмотреть From basement

I believe the from the basement versions are the definitive versions of those songs. If you judge the album as that v the album is perfect.

This would have been considered one of their best if they had released the album in the basement tape version.
But they wanted the studio record to sound a specific way and I’m not going to try to tell Radiohead how to approach their albums.

one of my favourites. I mean Tom Yorke's crazy moves on lotus flower alone would make this one of my favourites but the songs are also really sick.

The King of limbs is an amazing album. While I could still do without Feral. The rest of the album is perfect to me. While it’s still not in my top 5 Radiohead. That’s only because those 5 are perfect.

Bloom I can listen to 10x in a row and never tire.
For me it's Bloom, Give Up the Ghost, Mr. Magpie, and Feral.
That's enough for me although wish there had been more tracks.

I feel like there's probably a listen one day when I finally get it, but in general, no. Kid A and Amnesiac are better mood albums.
Having said that, I do keep coming back to it. I'll put on the live in the basement version on Youtube whilst I'm working to see if the songs have woven gold from straw yet. So far it's still just straw.
@Ricksanch32

To me it’s one of their best. I always put this album on par with Kid A.

I wish they would have included supercollider and the butcher on the official album. I think these inclusions would have changed the entire general discourse on how good this record is. And failing that I’ll fight anyone who can’t see the argument for Codex/ Give Up the Ghost/ Separator being possibly the best three-song run they’ve ever had on any album.
