Why I Love This Musician……..

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | May 23, 2026

One of my favourite people won an Ivor Novello Award last night and rightly so. I was lucky enough to work with Linda Perry a few years ago and I recently discovered that she has a new album out, so it seemed like a good opportunity to talk about what makes her so unique.

Review starts at 4’36″…..

Sounds a lot like Sisters of the Moon off the Tusk album. That's a good thing. Linda is quite prolific. Her career has impacted the careers of so many other musicians. Stevie didn't have a lot to do with the Tango in the Night album in 1987. I am not sure that she and Lindsey were even speaking at that point. I do believe her Seven Wonders is on that album.

Well,…. fair venerated writing and musicianship assay, I would say. Now my friends,…let's put on our desert avian mod-squad steampunk folding-paper maché black-hearted Dylan meets Bonanza thinking bowlers on and discuss the wardrobe period genre as well as etiology.

Thank you so much for showcasing Linda Perry and all of the other fantastic artists that interest you. I'm going to see Sleaford Mods tonight in Vancouver, and your show turned me onto them. So great!

@justinhawkinsridesagain, Justin, I just finished listening to the new The Darkness single "Masters of the Universe" and instantly fell in love with it. I added it my "fave rock songs" playlist in order to play it on repeat. It's a massive banger of a song and your vocals, as always, are incredible. I grew up in the 80's (born in 1975) and it reminds me very much of the hard rock and metal songs of that era. It especially reminds me of Dokken. It's very much in that same vein. Anyway, BRAVO! I think it's incredible. And I urge everyone to go and listen to it and add it to their playlists. ❤😊❤😊

Justin, I failed to know that you were involved with the Masters Of The Universe soundtrack. That song is a banger and brings to mind Queen's Flash Gordon soundtrack. It's a true moment of serendipity that the only movie I looked forward to this year has 2 of my favorite musicians, you and Brian May, working on the soundtrack. Thank you and your brother for writing kick ass music and making an old man smile on a day I ran out of anything to smile about. Rock on 🤘

I heard a little bit of Alan Parsons eye in the sky…I get that Stevie nicks feel also…. beautiful generalizing human nature lyrics that anyone can relate. I love her also..

There's a building in San Antonio Texas that when I was a child was called Piggly wiggly… later it became a music venue. Many cool bands played there from the 80s to the 90s. It closed at some point. I remember when four non blondes were touring that album and they played there…I didn't get to go but I am such a music fan I remember shows sometimes because I wanted to go.

Linda Perry, extremely talented. That said, What's Up is perhaps the most annoying song ever on radio. I can't reach the knob fast enough to make it stop if it comes on😂

    favourite musician?
    Miyako Watanabe of Lovebites.
Great guitarist and concert level pianoplayer.
She also composes a great deal of their music, made piano versions of both theirs and others music.
Most legendary is her pianocover of Judas Priest – Painkiller.
She also does some piano during their concerts.
Like when she plays Chopin before playing their song "Swan Song"… https://youtu.be/dcMVtrvpJpk?si=MOgARQxeGQSOKZyi
…or as a couple of years ago doing "Moonlight sonata" before "Dystopian Symphony" https://youtu.be/lvVbyA7RVGQ?si=5fE-FWgGRgUW0FYI
She's also endorsed by DEAN guitars and got a couple of signatures, besides a collection of Gibsons, PRS…
and a bunch of pedals. Dogowner (name: Wampa), mother, massive nerd with a bunch of Disney and Star Wars memorabilia.

One of my favorite L.P. songs is Knock Me Out with Grace Slick. It was on the original The Crow soundtrack (that whole soundtrack is amazing).
This song, especially at the beginning, was making me think of Sisters of the Moon by Fleetwood Mac.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the wild sex parties she had, Justin, full of prostitutes. I think James Blunt has spoken about it in the past. I can well understand why you'd stay quiet about that side of things.

The chunky silver curb is a clear show-stealer in the latest JHRA, well done. Linda Perry’s achievements are extraordinary: from fronting 4 Non Blondes to producing and co-writing with artists as varied as Courtney Love and Cheap Trick, the recognition is richly deserved. Pitch correction is simply part of modern recording: even Paul McCartney has used it; human voices naturally drift slightly in pitch. Anyway, with fewer than 50 days to Knebworth, surely it is time for He-Man to unleash the Power Sword before the masses and perform Masters of the Universe live.

I also love Linda Perry but…….. on another topic Justin if you don't mind. This story is bizarre to me. I've been following your channel for a few months with great enjoyment. I bought a Darkness album back in the day etc. Anyway lately my 12 yo son has become obsessed with AC/DC. He bought the Powerage album with his pocket money and we were crushing it at maximum volume while we were driving around today. We get home and I log on to my pc and guess what is in my feed? Your video on that exact album. Makes me think we're in a simulation.

Not gonna lie, I doubted the "she doesn't use pitch correction" statement as it's basically industry standard at this point. But I've just ran it through pitch monitoring software and I'll be damned, she really isn't, that's a vocal as raw as it gets, she's in between notes a lot of the time but she's got such a melodic recording voice that you just don't hear it. Fair play to her, incredible vocal.

Crazy to think back to the much younger version of me listening to the then newly released “Bigger, Better, Faster, More!” for the first time and thinking, “Oh my. This is something special.”

To see the depth and breadth of Linda’s work since then is crazy, yet makes complete sense.
