This Star Is So Strange, It’s Confusing Every Scientist Watching It
We like to organize the universe into neat categories. A star is either alive and fusing, or it is dead and cooling. A supernova is either a total destruction, or it is not a supernova at all. The zombie star forces us to accept that these categories are artificial. Nature does not care about our definitions. It operates in the gray areas. We found an object that exists halfway between life and death. It is a star that exploded but did not die. It is a corpse that is still generating heat.
The most impressive part of this story is the durability of the object itself. We tend to think of stars as gas and plasma, things that are easily blown apart. But a white dwarf is something different. It is a crystal of degenerate matter. It is one of the hardest and densest structures in existence. The fact that it can withstand a subsonic nuclear fire burning through its own core is a testament to that strength. It took a planetary-scale bomb to the face, and it is still standing.

New anxiety unlocked. What if the zombie star or companion star goes flying off off on a trajectory that has it heading right for our little rock? 😮
