Why People Disappear | The Psychology of Being Alone

Aperture | May 15, 2026

Everyone is dying. Most of us just don’t think about it until we have to. This compilation sits with the question we spend our whole lives avoiding: what death actually is, what it costs us, and whether escaping it would even be worth it. No easy answers.

00:00 – The Psychology of People Who Never Leave Home
37:56 – Why Being Single is Better Than You Think
1:09:06 – The Psychology of People Who Don’t Post Their Photos on Social Media
1:23:54 – Why You Should Stay Single

I'm a black guy in the UK, Jamaican parents. I was diagnosed as having ASD, Aspergers and ADHD (always suspected) in my late 20s but grew up as the "weird" kid. I'm tall, broad shouldered, got dimples lol passed all exams through school and college, lowest grade a B.

But this just meant that people were curious about me. At 33, I can honestly say I have 0 friends, I only visit my mom, I have 9 siblings, most older with children of their own, I've visited them but they never visit me (kids I guess).

I'm a sales manager and have been for 3 out of my 8 year sales career. But in the office, I'm seen as the guy who just works hard and goes home.

I'm just tired, I tried a lot to be a part of the group but it's not cool when you're always the "weird" guy or the "quirky" guy or the "yeah he's nice" guy 😂😂 its weird knowing I have a huge personality but haven't really had anyone to genuinely share it with for a long time. As a man, modern women are mostly too self centered to understand other people's problems amd show true empathy so dating is always out of the question.

The most comfortable lifestyle for me will always be one of solitude. Its not about want, its about society. It wasn't designed for everyone, certainly not people like me.

And DON'T GET IT TWISTED, this isn't sad or depressing. Its just simple observation and understanding

i left Chicago during the covid bullshit to come live in the painted desert miles from anyone else.
having thousands of peaceful rioters swarming the streets outside starting fire and smashing windows was the final straw for me.
i live in my truck so im not technically indoors…
but isolation is all i want anymore.

I met my husband on discord. I don't go on it much since I moved in with him. I've no friends out here, not real ones anyway. They are his friends and I've been adopted into the group. I still and trying to find a third place here… but the east coast is very different than the Midwest. I wonder if I wasn't a mother and had a job if I would ever leave our apartment other than to go hiking. Hiking is my refuge and after watching this video, I'm glad I don't allow myself to become recluse.

I just don't like living close to people because they're friggin loud and I get over stimulated. I like people. I like going out, connecting, then going back into my hidey hole out in nature where there are only frogs yelling at night. I do not want placebo internet friends. I want real connection. But, back into my hidey hole home.

Diaspora & Disappear – Both trace back to Proto-Indo-European roots concerned with scattering, division, or separation
(e.g., PIE (*sper-) "to scatter" for diaspora, and potentially shared roots involving (*dis-) "apart" or division for disappear).

People are scared to go outside and interact with other people because they are scared to be corrected because they can’t do a thing. This new generation just lays in bed all day and watch videos. They don’t even know how to use a broom or do something so simple. Good thing i picked a good job as a handyman and i can do all kinds of things and interact with people other wise i too would be stuck in a hole!!😂😂😂😂

This happened so fast. I got a new place two months ago and, besides for work, I haven’t really left since.
This feels like a direct call out- I’ll get out and go camp at a lake this weekend.
