PANOPTICON Det Hjemsøkte Hjertet REVIEW + Albums RANKED

Metal Trenches | May 14, 2026

Today we are ranking the albums of Panopticon, the groundbreaking atmospheric black metal/folk project led by Austin Lunn. From the raw early experiments of Panopticon and Collapse to genre-defining masterpieces like Kentucky, Roads to the North, and Autumn Eternal, all the way through modern triumphs like The Rime of Memory and Det Hjemsøkte Hjertet, this discography dives deep into Appalachian folk, bluegrass, black metal, and emotional storytelling. @BindruneRecordings #panopticon #blackmetal

One of my favorite bands of the last decade or so. I'm probably an odd man out though because Scars, and And again until the light are by far my favorites. I still can't get into Autumn Eternal for whatever reason.

I have never been able to get into this artist. Tried and tried getting into them since Kentucky and progressing forward, but just cannot understand the hype. The new album sadly didn't change my opinion (the vocals and most of the riffs are so buried in the mix). More power to anyone thinking this is peak American BM.

It's the best album I've ever heard from the guys, 10/10 AOTY…

No. Actually while I really do like this disc they picked the absolute worst song to start it with. The disc took seven minutes to literally get going. It should have started with the second track and the first one should have been shuffled further to the back.

Haven’t really dove into this band so decided to try this new album and have to say it SUCKS! Production is horrible and the vocals are abysmal switching between a man taking a shit and drunk rambling. Credit for the use of instrumentation and theme but songs meander and go nowhere the last song does not need to be 13 minutes long and no song should have been more than maybe 5 2/5

It was actually your "Top 100 Metal albums of the decade" that led me to Panopticon with Autumn Eternal placing in the top 100.
It resonated with me in the same way as at that time I was transitioning into college and dealing with loss of friends and work burnout. It really helped ground me and cemented you as my favorite metal channel🤘
    Thankyou

I definitely felt that "Det Hjemsøkte Hjertet" is their best album thus far, and that's saying a lot considering how incredible the whole discography is.
Something about it just felt so refreshing and new and it felt like Austin was really experimenting with some new ideas on it and knocking it out of the park with each one.

Their concert here in Utrecht was perhaps the greatest concert i’ve seen, it was immense and gorgeous. Had a talk afterwards with Austin about Ingmar Bergman our favorite spots in Norway. Will definitely remember that evening.
Anyway, great video, hyped it up! Thanks!

Watched Panopticon a few years ago and they played roads to the north in full, nothing short of fuckin' beautiful. Lunn is a stand up chap, his stuff continues to go strength to strength.
