Y’all Ask Me Insightful And Unhinged Questions! 5 Years of HMP!
In episode 269 of Heavy Metal Philosophy, Jon Barbas is celebrating the five year anniversary of Heavy Metal Philosophy! You all asked me a bunch of really insightful but also unhinged questions. That’s what I love about this community, we can plumb the depths of our minds or the toilet humor. Either way it’s always fun here. Thank you!
The rock band I mentioned was
Ayron Jones

A very insightful and, as always, thought provoking glimpse into what makes HMP tick. A lot of what you were asked had me thinking back to a time when I dipped my toe into the world of heavy metal journalism and finding a number of similarities in our responses. Here's to another 5 years.

Hey Barbas! You should include Karcius' new album Black Soul Sickness for your Dealers Choice. This is Progressive Grunge out of Canada

YO Peter Watts! Blindsight is ALSO an easy top 5 sci fi book for me, might even be #1 it's way up there. Didn't expect to see that! Also love Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus and The Rebel are some of my favourite philosophy works to recommend to utter newbies to philosophy because the man has STYLE, and I know if they get turned on to Camus and get excited, I can widen the wedge and drop some Nietzsche on 'em, and then if they love Nietzsche I can drop Nietzsche's writings on the pre-Socratics on 'em…and after that, they're hooked. They're in the deep end now.

Congrats on 5 years of HMP! I'm a fairly recent visitor to your channel and I find myself coming back regularly because you've got interesting and well thought out perspectives. Oh, and of course for the Metal. Here's to another 5 years!
I did not expect a shoutout to Silk Sonic in this video (or on this channel, for that matter). I wish we'd get new material from the guys, because 'An Evening With Silk Sonic' is such a smooth pleasure of an album. And this from someone who is not a huge modern R&B fan to begin with (when it comes to R&B I was raised on the old Motown acts, among many other things, and that's where my R&B love truly lies).
Love your Black Metal shoutout as well. 'Black Medium Current' is an excellent album by an excellent band. The mind of Yusaf Parvez is truly a unique place.

Our oldest German Shepherd (Bella) absolutely thrashes when certain metal is on. Ripped up her new bed while had Hobb's Angel of Death cd on. My wife, Michelle was NOT happy; I thought it was funny.
Congratulations on five, Jon and let's double down. ❤
Edit #1: BEST metal show on Yt, hands down. 💯

your content, taste, ideas are all good but your secret weapon is that iconic voice man… If I sounded like this I would abuse my voice in all ways possible – I wonder if its 100% natural like this or you actually at some point added that tiny bit of distortion to it just to sound badass and then it became natural like this? 😀

Do you read? I'm reading a fantastic book at the moment. (I'm into nonfiction political stuff)… "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa" by Walter Rodney I love Eat the Elephant by A Perfect circle most of all

This is brilliant Mr B. I saw NIN at Brixton Academy, London. Just after The Fragile dropped. Was unreal. 🤘🏻🤘🏻

One of the only bands I can understand the drummer being front and centre is folk punk band Blyth Power, or bands like them, where the drummer and lead vocalist are the same person. A very rare occurrence. But to just distract from a total lack of an actual live performance by the band is weird.
Animals metal. My mother had a small green parrotlet named Nigel, he was about the size of a lime, and loved it when she put metal on, and would headbang along to the really heavy stuff. Rest In Metal Nigel the heavy metal parrotlet.
You and Awesome Davis need to do an ambient metal EP that can be played on a loop for heavy metal chill sessions. That would be really cool.

There are a good amount of Rock bands that are trying to make it. Most of them even have their own identity within the music. I get recommendations for Rock bands all the time while perusing YouTube Music. Unfortunately, the only Rock band that stays in my head is Sludge Mother. They have an early 90s Rock sound. A little Grungy, but not the focus. There is also Alt Blk Era which is more of a Rock fusion band.
Anyway, it appears that every band that uses guitars and riffs gets labelled as Metal when some are clearly Rock. Doing a very quick Google search, Rock has gotten so vague that when people hear Rock music with riffs and heavier tuned guitars… they default to just calling it Metal.

I like Rival Sons and Greta Van Fleet for RNR. Its def on life support no doubt. Technology killed alot of things. Interests in learning guitar, Bass, drums, etc. isnt good. Affordability is a killer too. Theres a kid somewhere who wants a guitar so bad but his family just cant afford it. Many factors these days. It sucks!
