Frigate NVR, coupled with a local NAS provides all the fancy features without the spying. Hardwired is best to avoid the side channel attacks.

Security cameras basically just make a mockery of you. One thing they dont do is actually get your stolen stuff back which to me is more important than knowing who stole it

I'm going to take aim at this video for not recognizing the reality many of us live under. I know these things are awful for privacy,, i know that…. But in today's political and judicial climate, if someone tries to break into my house and I have to use force to defend my family, perhaps deadly force, I am basically screwed. I will face an activist prosecutor who will say I couldve been nicer or just ran away, and a public reaction calling me the worst type of person because the burglar was of a certain background. My effort to defend my family will at worst cost me my job and ruin my life, and at best drain me of thousands of dollars in savings for lawyers. The only practical defense against all of this for a normal person like me is to have overwhelming video evidence that clearly shows the entire incident and how aggressive the other person was being, which requires using many of these cameras… It sucks that I have to give up my privacy for this, but its the unfortunate reality of the world right now.

Thank god it is illegal for companies and insurance to do this in the EU. All camera feed you have of your private property (it is illegal to film public property, like the street). Is your property and can not be asked for not needs to be declared that you have a video doorbell. There are also video doorbells that store the video locally. Those could help in the US.

It seems like if you encrypt your ring, you will no longer be able to see your camera live. Only recordings. I could be wrong, but thats what it looks like to me.

i can't believe i just watched a random video of somebody not understanding that charlie kirk was never shot!!! tons of info out there backing this up that's way more convincing that he was shot. i can't seem to escape hearing that he's dead. please update your views after actually learning about what happened that day. i'm not only tired of living with all these cameras but also tired of the mental laziness humans embrace.

A great example of how unhelpful Ring camera's are is the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie in Arizona. They were able to find out all kinds of things about the suspected kidnapper, but not enough to find that guy.

That dog walking hypothesis is…weak, to be charitable. Bad guys, who are just misunderstood and underserved, I am sure, don't want little, noisy dogs to draw attention to their activities. That is why small, yappy dogs are a greater deterrent than large, scary, but quieter dogs. It is known. No hard evidence is provided to support the claim surveillance video provides no evidence for investigations into crimes or for prosecutions. In fact, it defies reason and common sense. We likely have all seen at least instances of crimes caught on video which provided some sort of evidence where otherwise there would have been none. Bad guys, who I am sure are really the good guys, if only, can wear masks, yes. That does not mean video of their crimes, I mean, their desperate acts against the fascist patriarchy, cannot or do not provide evidence against them, nonetheless. Perish the thought.

I have on multiple occasions seen crimes being committed LIVE on my security cameras and then been able to confront and end the crime in real time. I found that these people don't really like being confronted in real time. And they will sometimes shoot guns at you for doing this. My new idea is instead of walking out my front door to confront them I think I will just open the door a crack and shoot an air powered horn that will at the very least startle them and perhaps wake up my neighbors as well so they can be aware of what is happening. I would be willing to bet that they won't stick around after hearing the air horn. My ultimate goal would be to see a crime happening in real time and to be able to call the police and have them come out. I always hated the fact that my neighborhood has only one entrance/exit. But their may actually be an advantage to having this. Once the criminals come inside the neighborhood if the police were called and managed to get here before they left they could technically catch them and end the madness. It might not work. But it's worth a try.

So my question is simple… how do I get involved in this? What can I do to be a part of the fight against things of this nature, and where do you learn all of this?
Google isn’t like it used to be, and it seems to me that AI isn’t just trying to stop illegal things. It’s also trying to stop learning anything that could be detrimental to big corporations. I get some of the CRAZIEST request denials 🤦🏻♂️.

I had a ring that broke because of summer heat. I installed another one that was wired to my original doorbell wiring. It would work for 3-4 minutes than wouldn’t provide any video. But audio was available. I also have logging tags to notify if my doors were opened or closed. So I had to get an entire new doorbell system rated at 48v. All this was about $500.00 to get hardware and installed myself. Now I know this is completely different than what you’re describing but here’s the kick. Sometimes the camera mysteriously just loses connection with my WiFi network. But will still send audio. So right now smart home devices aren’t smart enough for the average consumer. They will have to contact a local hardware repair shop that specializes in iot devices. I mean I have a smart fan that refuses to connect to the controller/network even after resetting it. I agree with the fact that people need to consider a cctv camera system instead of a WiFi based system.
