Wonderful video ✨🤍 it's fascinating how similar our early journey down the vkei rabbit hole was. Mason Madden was a really lovely crossover from another one of my special interests

Five minutes in and I am reminded of a band called Deluxe Deluxe. Guess it was the Japanese men in drag comment that made me think that. They're pretty dope.

I'm not really into J-Rock outside of JAM Project, but "lived and died by piracy" is a pretty accurate description of the western tokusatsu fanbase, too. TsuPro has made pirating Ultra obsolete but Toei is still super stingy with Kamen Rider (such as individual episodes of Agito and Kabuto only being up for a month) and the Zeztz simulcast announcement was met with MUCH rejoicing by English-speaking fans. As for the Super Sentai series (RIP), Hasbro's intervention on Shout Studios' efforts means three seasons are available but unable to stream and we won't get more soon. I find this especially sad since I consider the era of Abaranger-through-Go-Busters to be the franchise's golden age. Official subs would be much appreciated.

TLDR; I understand the struggles of the Vkei fandom because of grown adults wearing spandex.

It's so nice to see Brennan Williams credited as "AEW's Madden Mason" rather than "That NFL player with the body pillow" or "Better Woolie," my guy has made it 🥲

Avalon!? I might be mistaken, but is that the venue in NYC that was a church turned into a nightclub? If so, than that place was originally called The Limelight back in the day. I attended a handful of raves there before it changed owners and became Avalon. Definitely a awesome venue if its the same place I'm thinking of.

i think my first jrock album was glay's greatest hits, followed by xjapan, diru, then malice. I don't really care for their music and only follow Diru these days when it comes to Japan bands. They're such an anomaly. I also went to one of their first 3 shows way back when, then also saw them when they opened for deftones in california, then again in az a few years later. I don't think there's another band I can say I've seen that many times live. Mad crushin' on their bassist even tho i know he's a total dork. lol

I just binged like 20 of your videos in a row after remembering the Blowfly Girl story and wanting to know how she's doing, and I can't tell you how shocked I am to see a Malice Mizer video from THREE WEEKS AGO wow. 🫨 I feel like it's obvious from my face makeup that I've been inspired by the over the top visual kei aesthetic. Discovering Mana and Malice Mizer was my goth awakening when I was like 11.

I like Japanese Math Rock check it out if you haven't (Elephant Gym and Hyakkei are good options). I'll check this MM band out but have a feeling it's gonna be too weird will report back tomorrow

God. You just reminded me of long ago. I ran into Malice Mizer, Dir En Grey, Gackt, Hyde, D'espairsRay, etc… because of a nice little gem of a site called audio.isg. Definitely a core memory. Miss some of those people on audio.isg.

I got introduced to VK from hearing Larc en Ciel's Ready Steady Go, Lost Heaven, and Link all from Full Metal Alchemist. Then I recognized Hyde's voice in other songs like Seasons in Blood Plus, Day Breaks Bell in Gundam 00, and Niji in the Roroni Kenshin Movie. I didn't learn the genre was vk, I always called it J-rock then I found my favorite Larc en Ciel song Nemuri ni Yosete which lead me to finding Malice Mizer which is now my favorite VK and band in general.

Okay Whang I see your point about Piracy introducing Western Folk to new bands over seas… and thanks man, it was your video on Plastic Love that helped make me a fan of City Pop, you rock dude.

I was at the Avalon NYC Dir en grey show also. Magical. So many memories from this video. Batsu forum, Winamp (i was a Soulseek user)

Getting CDs was difficult! I remember the store Anime Castle in Queens would have limited jrock CDs and DVDs and thats where i started my collection from.

Did you go to the D'espairsray show at Don Hills NYC? That was my first concert as a teenager.

It would be REALLY tough to rerecord everything when they've had so many different vocalists and while Gackt in particular can still sing very well, his voice is definitely nothing like what it was in his prime. It probably wouldn't meet the Visual Kei standard. The fanbase knitpicks.

But on the other hand, if you release an inferior product, more fans will just pine after the superior version meaning people might just really buy the original albums in a "fuck it, I'll get it myself" move.

The only one I know and like from Malice Mizer is Gekka no Yasoukyoku, and that's because of Castlevania Symphony of The Night. 🦇

Very interesting video, but why do you keep calling them Malice "maiser" /ˈmʌɪzə/ when the name of the band is not English but French (malice misère)?

I got into vkei in middle school and my fave groups was the gazette and malice mizer during gackt era. When Sony started restricting their music, mainly the gazette, I stopped listening to them because it was becoming too much work to hunt them down with piracy when my go to sites kept getting taken down and the advancement of streaming. During that time I found buck tick and they became my favorite band ever since. Their stuff always been easy to find. I can never understand the other bands or their managements NOT HAVING THEIR MUSIC AVAILABLE like what is the reason? Do they not want fans? 😭

Edit wow the person posting malice mizer is just doing it for money. That's so evil. Might as well add their music to streaming to stop this. Japanese record labels are so weird for making this hard

Gosh, I feel so seen. I don't really have any friends with the same "history" as me so it's really nice to come across someone who can summarise my own experience so well haha
