I took a retail job two years ago. I was so out of the loop, I wrote this off as "new" stuff I didn't care about. It's hilarious to me that most of the songs I considered new were already ten years old and Todd had a video about most of them
I'm kinda taking the meaning in a mental way, the walls in your head are tumbling down, you're going insane, but if you close your eyes, you just see black, like you did since the first day of your life.

Even if it wasn't brought up in the most flattering context, I'll always be grateful to Todd for accidentally introducing me to one of my favorite bands of all time!

This song is about self-destruction, to me. Maybe that's projection but it FEELS very self-loathing, yes it's about a disaster but this is a disaster you brought on yourself and you are in DENIAL. To me, "does it almost feel like nothing changed at all" is at the same time a desperate attempt at comforting yourself and a bitter realization that you are caught in a cycle of self-sabatoge, same with "you've been here before". That's why it immediately switches gears to "how am I gonna be an optimist about this" because you KNOW you're lying to yourself and you're just reaching for yet another flimsy excuse or short term relief. The pompeii thing even still makes sense to me, if you were an ancient roman and actually believed in the roman gods and stuff back then you'd probably think those guys brought it on themselves to some extent too. And the song even kinda says it— "we were caught up and lost in all of our vices".
I actually love the out of order quality of the song. If you are coping with any kind of personal tragedy, your mind doesn't move linearly. Your mind just sort of flails.

Also i think the song is indeed about rhe angst , feeling down about change , a nostalgic sond about nostalgia
Also 9:30 i think he mightve tried to make the break before a clean point as if the singer/writer is breaking down about all the change sooner than he though idk

As an (ex) NY'er, when I first heard this song, I thought it might have been about 9/11. After a few times hearing it, i thought it was someone complaining about the demise of religion. The truth, it turns out, was way darker. Thanks for the video.
I feel like I'm only one didn't hear the lyrical dissonance. Since the song sound like a despair song right off the bat. The chorus might be reason but I'm not sure if it's that.
