The REAL Story Behind Echo & the Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon”
To Echo & the Bunnymen’s Ian McCulloch, “The Killing Moon” from Ocean Rain is a work of fate, born from dreams, chance discoveries, and cosmic obsession. From his claim that the lyrics were “already written in the stars” to the band’s surreal trip to Russia and the chaotic recording sessions that nearly tore them apart, this story behind one of the 80s music greats. It’s time to unravel how one of the most haunting and timeless post punk and new wave tracks came to life.

Ian wasn't wrong when he said it's the best song ever written.

I must admit that I'd never heard it until Donnie Darko so now I always think of Donnie cycling down that hill.

First time I heard this song, after its release back in '84, I liked it. About a week later I heard it for the second time, and over that seven day period, it had somehow transformed into an epic and timeless masterpiece…
Went out and bought the album Ocean Rain, which remains to this day, one of my favourite albums of all time.

The song is a timeless classic with an underlying sinister vibe that makes you want to lose yourself in the darkness. One of my all time favorites.

I am amazed that the word Russia was used in a non-negative way.
Second time this week so maybe Russophobia is losing its luster for the unwashed masses?
Back to the song, bloody fantastic and although not my favorite from them (The Cutter is mine), it’s a genuine genius piece of art.

Since first seeing them in 79, and dozens of times after, the Killing Moon will always be the best song ever written. Fortunately, I’m from the Wirral and only a stones throw away from Liverpool, so got to see them on numerous occasions.

I was in a band with Will and Ian
I've stood on stage and played that songs to many faces all over the world. And I can tell you, I never once took the moment for granted 🙂

Do you know anything about the band, “Waxing Poetics”?

March 31, 2026 at 2:07 pm
I've had this kind of experience my entire life, here and there, where I wake from sleep with not just an entire composition and lyrics in my head, but in my ears like I've got a radio alarm clock waking me with a song, complete from start to finish. But since I have no training, and don't know how to write music it'd slowly fade out of existence and if I was lucky I'd remember only a fragment after just a couple of hours. It's one of the worst feelings of loss I've felt in my life outside of losing a person every time it happens.

A great album all around but to me Silver was the best and if he could've found words to replace the la, la, la's it might be one of the best songs of all-time.

I loved these songs as a teenager but never really listened to what I was singing. Then later in life it occurs to you.. wow, that is genius. As a devotee of Krishna, the line 'He will wait until you give yourself to him' fits with the highest philosophy of bhakti yoga. Beautiful.

I love this song, but it's two verses and a chorus repeated a lot, with the first verse repeated as a third verse. That's not a complicated song; it's a lovely song cut short of its potential by repetition. Echo and the Bunnymen have much better songs to their credit. Your excessive enthusiasm and descriptions are far more tedious than the song deserves. This is why I gave up writing about music and reviewing records. The standard is so low that it seemed useless to bother.

It always reminded me of vampires or a gay song. One of my favorite songs. And it's bath as in you're taking one. Should have been in the Lost boys

Respectfully, this song seems the opposite of a GOD sent song, particularly when he sings "fate against your will" and "he will wait until you give yourself to him". That sounds like a possession. Also, why would he call the song "Killing Moon" if it was from GOD? This songs sounds like a guy under possession ready to kill under "The Killing Moon."

Thanks for the video. As a punk rocker and metal head in my early twenties when the album was released it certainly came as a surprise after the albums that proceded it, especially the first two. Many of us didn't know what to think of it and didn't like it at the time. I've come to love it since.
