The secret sauce with Seth was that he's the greatest straight man of the last 30 years behind only maybe Jason Bateman. Put anybody next to him acting crazy, and he can perfectly reflect and amplify their insanity. Add on top of that all the skills required to do the same thing against abstract news stories instead of just characters and you get a fantastic late night host. Insanely talented dude, but I can imagine this era must have been some real insane imposter syndrome

I'd have enjoyed hearing Seth finishing one single sentence in this interview, immensely. 😒 On the other hand I acknowledge the significance of the host interrupting Meyers only to pseudo-explain the obvious before Seth (see also: the guest ) could ever complete a train of thought. 😏

Seth Meyers had a huge influence on that era's cast – Bill Hader cites it was Seth who taught them, the show will be competitive, but they don't need to compete with each other. In the SNL documentary James Franco filmed, we can see how Seth led the writer's room and also helped raise his cast members sketches so they went from good to great.
It's having a huge heart and wisdom in knowing your team member's strong points and your own weaknesses; To accept those and proceed with making everyone better. I have such strong appreciation and admiration for him.

Neal, when can we see Bill Hader on the podcast?

I am a HUGE Parks and Recreation fan. I love the character Leslie Knope. But I realized recently that I have never laughed at something Amy Poehler has ever said or done.

This was an interesting watch. I love all of these guys, and while I don’t think Seth is wrong, I do think he was irreplaceable on the show. He was perfect for weekend update and I loved him in the show and as head writer while he was on SNL.

It's very interesting to hear Seth's view of himself compared to his cast mates because in my mind he his absolutely on their same level. Different styles/strengths, sure, but still just as funny and talented.

Just to balance out my dickish audio criticisms: Mr. Brennan, "3 Mics" is in my "Top 5 Most Amazing Stand Up Sets". No jokes, it was so….just…you know? That thing that happens when it's supposed to be funny, but you end up really questioning yourself, and crying a lot? It was that. A-hole. But also amazing, and I'm really happy to see you here on the only media I intake these days.. Btw, your mic is a bit hot. Who is your next interview?

You ONLY get my like this time, because of that zoom onto your lips when you said "up the ying yang". Do with that information, what you will.

Seth throws great pitches. Those guys hit bombs. Seth can throw no-hitters and deliver a great scripted piece with added flare, but those skit masters can, when they get the right pitch, hit a monster.

Sometimes, your nastiest stuff is just BP to the greats.

The audience gets to enjoy it all.

Its hard to talk about those years of snl without some kind of mention of Horatio sanz, but maybe choose a clip that doesn't have him right up front. I know it was like 2 seconds but even 2 seconds is triggering. Not a big fan of pedofile groomers for some reason. I miss you so much Seth but I do not miss Horatio whatsoever.

What's crazy is that while Seth is right about where he ranks for sketches, he's still a damn good performer. He kills it on A Closer Look with the impressions and everything. It's more a testament how legendary those other members are, than a knock against Seth

Gotta give Seth a lot of credit. He had a very high level of self-awareness in the moment to recognize both his limitations and strengths relative to the others. Many performer's egos would not have let them do so. Instead of becoming bitter and resentful about the lack of visibility he forged a place for himself as a writer/weekend update host that leveraged his best assets and that he was able to transition to hosting the late show.

The Lorne Michaels quote that dismisses SNL criticism by saying whatever cast you grew up with is your favorite cast is rubbish. Seth’s cast were absolute monsters comedically. The cast currently is less funny than whatever pops up on your Tik tok and instagram feeds.
