The Reason Travis Fimmel Left Vikings After Season 4

Looper | March 23, 2026

Travis Fimmel’s Ragnar Lothbrok was one of the reasons the historical drama Vikings became such a success. Fimmel brought the legendary Viking hero and warrior to life and added humor, ferociousness, and passion to create one of the show’s most popular characters.

Fimmel embodied the fearless warrior for four seasons, taking him from humble beginnings as a farmer to being a conquering warrior king. All good things come to an end however, and after four seasons, Fimmel decided to leave Vikings.

He was missed, but could the hit series have prolonged Fimmel’s stay? Here’s the real reason Travis Fimmel left Vikings after four seasons.

He mentioned in an interview, his character was originally scripted to die in season one – and cracked a joke about it, his extended contract after the bait and switch lol. But this video just mentioned that half way through. 🎉☝🏽😅

OMG!!!! Seriously, he played Steve McQueen in a movie. I need to get with it. I've been comparing him to Steve since I saw the first scene of Vikings. Travis doesn't even have to have lines, to draw your focus to him, just like Steve did. That's hilarious, I guess I should watch that movie. lol

Without Rick Grimes, I lost my passion for TWD.
Without Ragnar, I lost my passion for Vikings.
I guess I should be grateful that Tony Soprano existed right up until the very last second of his show.
