The game in question was Exidy’s Death Race, and the newspapers, as you can imagine, had an absolute riot.

Back in the late 70ās early 80ās arcade games were more adult driven – hell they used to sell pac man beer steins at Pizza Hut – yes those are beer mugs.

i think the developers rely on the controversy as a way to stand out and get attention , then money. Wether its a game or music or a movie the difficult linr to walk is "how can we be offensive enough to make the newspapers without being outright banned." That must have seemes easier than just outright trying to make the best games they could.

Did Boot Hill come out of Gunfight or was it just renamed? I have vague memories of playing this in an Arcade in Penzance.
Also are there any surviving Midway Sea Wolf 2 machines surviving out there. I hope so as we had great fun playing that one!
A thing alot of 70's arcade games had was playability and very addictive.

Ohhhh Nellly. Death Race !! Believe it or don't. In my fair town, we had an 8 (eight) player version of that game !! The screen would be littered with crosses when you were done playing.

I'm not old enough to have played Death Race, but I'm old enough to have played Carmageddon. And I grew up to become not a murderer, but a bloody geek who works in a museum and enjoys watching all this kind of nerdy documentaries.
