Cougars in far northern Minnesota

Voyageurs Wolf Project | March 15, 2026

Checked our trail cams recently and captured another cougar on camera in April—our 8th observation since Fall 2022. This video shows all of 8 of our cougar observations thus far!

Although we know some are convinced there is a breeding, resident population in northern Minnesota, we have yet to see any evidence of that in our area. This is not to say it won’t happen, of course.

However, we have yet to routinely observe a cougar(s) traveling in the same area repeatedly through time. And haven’t observed any cougars with kittens. If we ever capture that, we will share that in a jiffy because that would be a pretty incredible trail cam capture.

And yes, we are aware of the observation of kittens in Michigan.

Beautiful killing machines. I figure over time Minnesota will have a breeding population like that of Michigan. Early days though, for both. The re-introduction of cougars into the eastern states and provinces is likely inevitable as they wander.

Beautiful animals, likely dispersing young male(s). Hopefully some females will inhabit the area before long. It took a long time for female Florida panthers to eventually get back north of the Caloosahatchee river

February 2025 we had deer browsing in the back yard. Suddenly they all stood in attention in the same direction and then bolted off like rockets. Just seconds after the deer took off a cougar come racing across the backyard. The next morning I was out putting seed in the bird trays before sunrise that cougar was at the edge of the yard, growled at me and then walked away. They are such cool cats.
