I Just Don’t Get It.

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | March 8, 2026

Polyphia have just released a song featuring Steve Vai, so I thought I’d give them another go. It’s called “Ego Death”. I find it really hard to analyse Polyphia…I’m not sure what to say about them and their music? Can you help me and comment below how you’d describe this and its appeal.

Someone probably said this already since this is 3 years old lol but "the tree of life" is actually a variation called "the tree of death" iirc. Hence the TOD model

Polyphia music is like Tim Henson said, it's a rapping or singing with guitars. So rhythm guitars and leads aren't just for guitars parts, it also speak a language of vocal and music at the same time.

Just like the content Taylor swift releases nobody is gonna remember this shite in 50 years. Unlike what people like Lee ritenhour, ray parker jr, Steve lukather, Dan huff, people who play in service of the song produced in their careers.

My favourite guitarists tend to be people like Lee rintenour, Steve lukather, Dan huff, ray parker jr, ect. people like that these that have played on thousands of records I love. As far as out and out lead guitarists go. Brian May probably,

I get that it's technically whatever. But it's singularly unenjoyable to listen to. Three or four musicians synching up their warmup exercises. Oo let's tap our foot, nod our head, wait for that coda? No. Just boinking around at a high technical level with the recorder going.

I love technical guitar stuff, always have and always will, but honestly can't get into listening to these guys.
I will once or twice, and be very impressed, even skip back to replay bits to soak it in. But then I'll never listen to it again.
It's like the late 80s, guitarist playing stuff to impress other guitarists. It really does impress too, it's insane talent and skill that most will never even see a hint of in their own playing. From a purely technical level it's superb.

I just don't enjoy listening to it.

There's people with 10% of the talent and skill that I'd prefer to listen to 99 times out of 100.

Hi Justin, I broke the same finger catching a vortex ball at extremely close distance from the thrower, and I've had issues playing guitar from it also. It's not too bad these days though. Cheers mate

I'm picking up a bitter hater vibe from this guy. And when he tries to play the guitar parts…😂😂 you nailed it man, you sound just like them!

Polyphia reminds me of my early years when I had no idea how to play and I just knew how to play notes really fast. And I would just play extremely fast, hammering on, pulling off & on, but with absolutely no soul.

Trying to invent a sound is a cool idea when music seems to find itself in a place of saturation BUT if I can’t bob my head, dance or sing along to it, it’s not music, it’s just arranged noise.

here I am at 43 years, jumping back into guitar playing just ordering a Paula after a decade or more – watching Justin. Fiddeli Diddeli Di… that's it for me. I give up being "good" at the guitar – let's just have f* fun. Thanks Justin

I get it! its music… I think…but it just doesn't work well, there too much going on and it all just ends up being a cacophany of annoying noises and interesting fashion choices. Steve Vai in there playing the Theramin apparently.

The music is a bunch of breakdowns strung together.

No chorus. No verse. No prechprus. No ending. Who the fuck said lets string all our bridge breakdowns together?

Basketball sneakers and jumpers are an undecided choice of I don't know what to wear. Half gay and half straight with long hair. Asian influence of copycat.
