Self driving smi trucks well fail in computer systems and law suites for humans life's well put companys broke in safe OSHA needs to step in on this and the president

Wasting billions of dollars trying to make a science fiction fantasy come true, when you can just build fcking trains and get the same results 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Maybe if more trucking companies or schools set up recruiters in high school or colleges maybe more young people will be interested in the industry. But honestly the “shortage” in trucking is probably just a myth.

What if we hook together like 100 trucks, stick them on some kind of metal track so they can only go straight, and have one giant truck at the front to pull the entire chain of trucks.

We can call this thing a new name, a "train".

People get so worked up about the sensors, execution and environmental interpretation required for autonomous driving that they forget that a good chunk of driving is decision making, something that robots are notoriously horrible at. Even something as simple as "what lane should I drive in" is not a verifiable problem you can train an AI to master using linear algebra because it's nuanced and complicated without a mathematically verifiable answer. This is why, even with eye watering quantities of data, Tesla's FSD is still worse at lane selection than a drunk 6 year old despite being able to map out its immediate surroundings with a high level of accuracy and execute manuvers fairly well. This problem is exaggerated for Tesla compared to other solutions since it does everything on the fly, but shows up in all of them the moment they're forced to go off the rails due to an unexpected event and need to make decisions. For any task where decision making can be required at a moment's notice with no ability to put the task on pause while a human arrives, automation is a pipe dream.

All the comments about reinventing the train are funny and shows the ignorance of the people watching this and even the drivers. The logistics to go from a train depot to a terminal adds another day to final delivery if not more. The driver needs a TWIC card to enter the port to get the freight. Also the container is heavier than a standard dry van and may require permits. A truck goes directly to the destination terminal and skips these steps.

Funny how we have a trucker shortage but I can’t find a decent paying job as a trucker in Salinas Ca. Been looking for over 6 months and nothing. Sad part
Is I can go back to Tulsa ok and make more money as a trucker with much less living expense. The industry is broken and does not pay enough. No one cares and most people would cheer us dying in a crash. This country would deserve a massive trucker shut down. That won’t happen because we are to busy trying to keep our heads above water to strike.

There is an underlying ontology problem. Computer algorithms can only process symbols, but have no whatsoever access to the understanding reality. Just imagine the depth of experiencing the birth of your first child and compare this with writing down, reading and processing the sentence „I watched the birth of my first kid“, stripped of all qualia, feelings and understanding. Reality is so much deeper and complex than processing symbols and representations will ever be able to capture.

They need to have the roads themselves be a data marker. Super cruse have this feature. They need to look at giving the vehicle eyes that can foresee better than a human driver. React better than a human being. I think who ever is going to make an autonomous vehicle needs to start really really small.

You see it's simple, you already have dedicated terminal, then why not joint them with dedicated road, and to make autonomous truck drive on them more easily, maybe just build some guide along the road so it simply follow that. Meanwhile, since it's dedicated, you don't need to worry about length limitation for public road, so instead of autonomous follower, you just join it with physical connection. And as the route is fixed, why bring heavy battery or tank with you, you can build wires along the road so it can power your truck when it's running. And this one might be sound radical, but hear me out, the friction between rubber tire and concrete road is really high, maybe we can replace it with something like.. steel?

America hates truck driver! THERE IS NO DRIVER SHORTAGE! AUTONOMOUS TRUCK IS A FARCE!. Do some more research and you will find out that more H1 BC Visas are being given out to flip flop wearing foreigners with little training getting paid less than 45 years go. Freight prices have not risen to today's levels so cut the crap with this BS video!

Ultimately you want autonomous driving to be used on specific stretches of road. This is highly useful to drivers who often need to stop to sleep. imagine if a driver can sleep for 4 hours on one stretch of road which is deemed safe, then be woken with an alarm for the next stretch which is deemed hazardous. it would save driver stopping time if they planned their trip correctly (which they do).

Decades in the future the government could build out an infrastructure of sensors and signaling devices that instruct autonomous cars when to stop, when to go, and where to turn. Autonomous cars could be practical with centrally controlled signaling that monitors all the cars.

Solution to the trucking if already existed like 200 years ago. It's called "railway". Requires less people, delivers more cargo at lower costs while being safer for everyone also.
But it isn't an option for US because automotive lobby not happy about it.

Aurora trucks are so autonomous that they went from 1 driver needed to 2 drivers needed, where both of them are sitting on their asses on the down time.

Musk Says Tesla Will Be the 2nd-Largest Semi Brand in America by 2024
The Tesla CEO claimed the company will make 50,000 Semis a year by 2024 — more trucks than Kenworth, Peterbilt, and Volvo Trucks sell in the U.S. each year.
