Radiohead’s Lost Decade: Grief, Gaza, and the Surprise Return

Poetic Wax | March 7, 2026

In November 2025, Radiohead surprised everyone with a return tour, their first in nearly a decade after quietly slipping away in August of 2018. What was behind this departure was a blend of grief, controversy, and the feeling that they had pushed themselves too far. Thom Yorke’s previous partner and the mother of his children had passed earlier that year, a continuing controversy behind a 2017 performance in Tel Aviv kept rearing its ugly head, and the other members, Colin and Jonny Greenwood, Phil Selway, and Ed O’Brien, seemed to feel they’d had enough. It’s time to look back over the past decade… Radiohead’s Lost Decade.

A bit late to it but I wanna give my own opinions on this, great video I'm glad to find content like this that usually is AI generated slop these days. Back on topic, Ed and Stanley being so active with advocating for Palestine is great and yk what everyone's problem was? You gave the 9/11 as an example but mostly THOM and people like Ed ofc (He is my goat ngl) have ALWAYS been advocating for human rights around the globe. Like when they had the Tibet flag or even a more focused issue that flew under the radar, Thom Yorke and musicians like Patti Smith the queen herself has advocated for the peoples voices in Turkey and talking about GEZI. Now don't come to me with the argument where Thom Yorke has called "Free Palestine" a trend where THOUSANDS are being killed and HAVE BEEN getting killed since 1948 is expected from them. Bands like Portishead legit calling Thom Yorke a knobhead and they have always refused to play in Israel same with Massive Attack.

Radiohead are a music band. They are just a music band.
With power. I hope they actually know that. They could have been insanely good allies against Israel precisely due to JGs boarder-spanning collabs. Like getting the Zulus and the Boers on the same punk album against artful leaders. Instead they were quiet, then Thom seemed guilty and therefore tantrumed in panic tbh. This escalated. I don't expect radiohead to lead the coming civil war or anything, just not be called an idiot for interpreting their art and actions at face value. Their art does a lot more for them than for me, so it will be easier for me to stay solid with my aparteid brethren. This is a really common way people avoid facing their mistakes. They call the accuser unenlightened to the true depth of a fairly clear mistake. We should just look closer and closer until the original point is out of frame.
Could you do a follow up where you go into the tweets he wrote following all the backlash? The attitude is pretty telling.
Weird Fishes lianne la havas cover for the pangs my lasses ❤

Boycott them? I can’t imagine growing up in the 90’s that socialism would infiltrate our society so hard that people would had Jews again the way they did pre World War 2. We sat through “Schindler’s List” as kids and cried. Then I guess we grew up and decided to bring back that old, biblical hate

They were my favorite band until they crossed the picket…One of the most political bands became hypocrites and normalized genocide in the name of artistic freedom…F them. Equal human rights for all. Free Pal.

I think we continue to miss the point of everything. Playing in Tel Aviv against BSD allows Israel to continue whitewashing their genocide. It would be the same as playing in South Africa in the 80's. We act as if Radiohead didn't do an act that goes against them as a band and what that band stands for. Truth against Power. I just don't understand the mental gymnastics we do for artists. I can't do it. I think to much about all those babies and youth people that have no voice.

The original source of the quote at 16:00 is actually from a twitter post from Thom as a response to Ken Loach in 2017.
I know The Guardian echoed it in a recent article, so it makes sense if that was the source, just putting more context out there since I noticed the citation at the bottom!
Loved the video, thank you for sharing!

Why do people pretend anything after OK Computer is good in any way and I have Amnesiac and that 3 Disc version of KID A MNESIAC – I loved the first 3 albums and there 26+ B-Sides, I had them all on a cassette tape the was on repeat in my Walkman – I saw him on Top Of The Pops solo on piano mumbling like a mentally ill homeless person and that was it – it was over.

I have always been a fan of Radioheads music. Hoverever listening to this commentary doesnt alter my opinion on there israel stance. Clearly this conflict hardly registered with the band until they copped the backlash from citizens. I struggle to understand how these artist can live in a bubble of their own egos! They arent working class or people of the soil. They lack commonality with their audience.

What they tried to do to Radiohead was very unfair, they we just a bunch of musicians with different views and then suddenly a mob asked them to pick a side, if you know and a long time fans of Radiohead you which side they were on; the people… not the government. They hate politics and frankly so do I.

I'm sorry but the argument that atrocities on both sides is just bs. This is just an excuse to not look at the matter with critical thinking, which is literally what Radiohead are supposed to be against in their songs. The idea of equating victims of decades with colonizers and invaders is just hollow. I love Radiohead but this middle ground bs in such calamity is boneless. imagine if ppl did the same about the french or jews in ww2. They can just say france forced germany with harsh treaty so they have their reasons and we stand against politicians from both sides. If you think this is reight? then you have not learned the lessons from appeasement policy that led to ww2

It is still deeply disappointing that they cannot acknowledge that a genocide is happening. Ed is the only one who has publicly called it what it is.

Radiohead gained significant fame in connection with Israel, a state actively committing genocide. Jonny’s wife has tweeted truly awful things about Palestine. It’s hard to ignore that they, as humans and not just a band, chooses not to use their powerful platform to speak out, especially given their ties to Israel.

While they may be undeniably one of the greatest bands ever, it’s still heartbreaking that they remain so silent about Palestine.

It feels like having a longtime, beloved friend you want to keep loving, only to realize they are willing to look away from genocide. How am I supposed to continue a relationship with this person/people? It’s a difficult thing, and hard to let go of something you love so deeply.

BDS folk could learn from vegans. When you're trying to fight the world, choosing your battles and being practical in your approach goes a long way in getting people to listen.

Both are valid, if u dont want to go to that country, fair. If u want to go there to play to there FANS . Thats fine aswell, like look at russia, they eather brainwashed or against what happends over there. How often do random ppl get fucked over because 1 Guy is doing a whole lot of bullshit. Same what thom says ngl.

Am i still listening, my earthly Brother i just started to listen what u meeean

The original True Love Waits was more upbeat at a time when his relationship with his wife at that time was more hopeful. The second release was a much slower tempo done on piano that rang of a sullen sadness and loss of the hope he once had after they'd separated. It was no wonder he wrote Daydreaming which confirms his grief at that loss of hope.

Anyone who would boycott this band would be doing themselves a disservice by denying great music that touches the soul.

Jonny, there DEFINITELY is no shame in working with Arab and Jewish musicians. Working with a regime that has been guilty for many years of human rights abuses, war crimes and genocide though IS shameful. Playing for their soldiers IS shameful. Expressing support for a regime like that, while expressing solidarity for the people in Tibet IS shameful.
Being that politically educated, yet still so inconsistent IS shameful.

Now I am from that side of the pond that subscribes heavily to the "hey just try to separate the art from the artist" approach to art.
It's easy for me to say this, because I lost interest in their music just around Hail to the Thief, but: maybe try and appreciate that you now get to see a whole different side of an artists, that was always seemingly on the right side of dark matters. Maybe they can finally be interesting again in spite of, or maybe even because of their different stance. Or non-stance, or whatever that was right there. After all it's a well known fact that good people can make shitty art just as much as shitty people can make impressive, thought provoking, upsetting, original art too.

I would appreciate a new Maquiladora, even if the lyrics upset me xD

And also I wanna say nice work, man. Well done!

They should be proud to have played in Israel. Bands that play glastonbury should be the ones we are asking serious questions about.

No idea why no one is mentioning it anywhere: the concert in 2025 ends with the silent projection of the human rights declaration of 1948. I read a buch of newspaper reviews, no mention of it. Literally no one is talking about that. It was very powerful to stand there after more than two hours of rollercoaster singing dancing and remembering and read the declaration from beginning to end. They are doing their part. Are we listening?

the way johnny greenwood and thom yorke have been publicly denounced and insulted by many self righteous people on the supposed left is disgusting. these people seem to care less about the actual catastrophe in gaza than about blaming other people which don't act 100% the way they demand it.
thanks for your video and for clarifying a lot of things that needed to be set right.

  25. @CD-tj3hg

    Very well made video.

This is truly a difficult one for me. I'm a staunch supporter of Palestine. The issue of the genocide is not as complicated as people are making it out to be: one side is being starved, humiliated, minimized, and brutalized all on film for the world to see. The other gets billions of dollars in US + UK taxes and weapons to slaughter all for the claim that there's no other land for Jews to live (an antisemitic notion when thought is put into it…why should the rest of the world have to shun Jews away to one particular location?).
As for Radiohead, I'm a huge fan of the band and have been for the better part of a decade. Where truly do they stand? Between Johnny's ties to "Israel" and Ed's antizionist rhetorics, it's hard to say. What of their statements about never playing in Israel again, or about politicians in suits hijacking them, is a true change of heart or just saving face?
There's no easy answer here. I'd love nothing more than to simply check out and listen to them anyway, or conversely just as easily shut the music off and never give them a second more of my attention. But my heart is pulled in two different directions, both because of my sense of justice and for my love of the band. I really have no idea.
