Bruce Dickinson just told the story of what happened during the first Iron Maiden rehearsal with Simon Dawson. And in all honesty, this is exactly what I wanted to hear from the band for all those months.
As first of all, spoiler, Simon crushed it. And secondly, and most importantly, Bruce Dickinson explained why the band needed a backup during their last tour. And it had nothing to do with Nicko McBrain’s playing.
So first of all, yes, what we kind of expected is now confirmed. New Iron Maiden drummer Simon Dawson did already have his first rehearsal with the band. And it happened not after the announcement but all the way last year amidst The Future Past Tour. And yeah, Nicko was of course well-aware of it. But most importantly, to a huge relief of all the die-hard Iron Maiden fans for whom Nicko McBrain, of course, is not just yet another drummer in the band’s history who can be easily replaced.

If Nicko has only retired from touring, does this mean that Nicko will play drums on the next record? I think Simon should play, and the material be fast stuff, like the first two albums.

When Nicko was 46 he said when the fans say he's playing like an old man , he'd hang it up. He waited a little longer than that as Iron Maiden is a corporation and Steve had told him to play it straight to keep playing.

Nicco has more than earned the right to bow out of the live shows. He is, and will always be, an Irons legend. A little bit saddened that he won't be playing on the tour, but I am still looking forward to another live show when I head off to see them again in Birmingham on 21st of June 🤘

I diverted our month long trip for my wife’s 60th so I could see Maiden in Perth, Australia last year, instead of flying from Sydney. I’ll be at the Run for your lives concert 100%

I would have liked IM to bring Thunderstick back in the band for the tour. He never recorded anything with the band in his time with the band. He used to work with Dickinson with Samson.

Maiden never wanted a copy of a former member in past lineup changes, Bruce isn't a copy of Di'Anno, Blaze, Janick… It makes sense they wouldn't want a Nicko copy now

Nicko’s in his 70s for crying out loud!!!!! When you get older, your body starts breaking down!!!! Esp if you’re a drummer, and it’s a lot more physically demanding than playing any other instrument in a band!!!!!
