Cboyardee and Tale’s of Games studios’ fan made sequel to the Genesis game Barkley Shut up and Jam, Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden, surprisingly wound up being one of the greatest fan made games of all time. Its success led to a highly successful Kickstarter campaign for a sequel, Barkley 2. However, although there have been updates since 2012, there has been no actual game released in over 7 years. In late June, posts from the somethingawful forums emerged indicating that the game might never come out, although what remains of Tale’s of Games studios claims to still be working on it.

Shut up and Jam Gaiden is good because of its story and linear game play which lets the story unfold. Being open world ish would detract from the story which is what was so cool. Look what Metal Gear Solid 5 did to the series.

On June 11, 2021, the game was officially cancelled, and the source code repository (with assets included) was released to the public under a CC BY-NC 4.0 license.

You wanna know what happened to Barkley 2? Paperjack made a post regarding the state of the game's development. Decided to release what was already developed for the game as an open source. And after that.. It was officially cancelled.

Classic case of feature creep in my opinion. I've been working on my own game for a few years now though I'm learning and creating everything myself.
If you don't put a cap on features then you'll just keep adding things until there's so much stuff to work on that's tied into other systems that it'd probably be easier to start over then fix and finish everything. I never heard of this game before now but I found out a demo was released along with all the files being dropped online as open source. So technically the game has been released in a way.
