Why there’s a ring of natural disasters around the Pacific

Vox | February 6, 2026

The belt of volcanic activity is called the Ring of Fire.

The Ring of Fire is a band of volcanoes and frequent earthquakes that runs from New Zealand, up through Eastern Asia, across the Bering Strait and all the way down to the Southern tip of Chile. Volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis appear around the boundaries of the several, fast moving, tectonic plates that make up the region. When the plates collide, they create areas of volatility.

The Ring of Fire sees more natural disasters than anywhere else on Earth, but what makes it particularly dangerous is that few countries are prepared.

To truly understand the international conflicts and trends shaping our world you need a big-picture view. Video journalist Sam Ellis uses maps to tell these stories and chart their effects on foreign policy.

The US West Coast hasn't had a real "Big One" since San Francisco 1906.
We will know instantly when it happens, it will be the biggest disaster in US history.
Japan 2011 level of mayhem. We aren't ready.

You wonโ€™t believe the eruption of Krakatau in December 2018. It caused a tsunami that hit the Lampung and Banten provinces of Sumatra and Java, respectively. A band known as Seventeen was performing a concert when the tsunami hit; thereโ€™s even footage of the show up until the waves โ€œcrashed the partyโ€ (that sounds like a cool slogan). The only survivor of the band was the vocalist; the rest, as well as his wife, died in the disaster.

Although the tsunami also hit Ujung Kulon N.P., the only place in the world where the Javan rhinos roam free, no rhinos were reportedly dead, and surprisingly two rangers perished.

The location of Mount Mayon in your documentary is far tetchily erroneously incorrect and wrong the location you showed is in Mindanao, but Mount Mayon is actually located in Bicol region in Luzon, make a fact check first before you publish something it will erode you integrity as a content creator in youtube. Do a correct and proper fact checking. I am a proud Filipino who take proud in the Topography of my beloved country.

75% of volcanoes are I. The RING OF FIRE. BUT THINGS ARE CHANGING NOW. AFRICIA IS SPLITTING APART, THERE'S A SPLIT IN THE OCEANS FLOOR, WHERE BUBBLES GO UP. AND ETHANE TOO, they are getting robots to help because it is so hot that far down, but I thought I saw gold down there maybe robots can get us an answer.

If Japan can build buildings like this then every city in our country should and must! Most people near fault lines would be willing to pay a reasonable increase in tax if they knew it went entirely to making housing safer in an earthquake.
