We Went To Montana: The Housing Inequality Will Shock You

More Perfect Union | February 3, 2026

Workers in Bozeman & Big Sky Montana are sleeping in vans, while the uber-rich buy massive mansions next door.

Montana’s Republican governors promised that huge tax cuts would be a boon to the economy.
Instead, they’re a giveaway to billionaires and private equity firms.

More Perfect Union’s mission is to build power for working people. Here’s what that means:

We report on the real struggles and challenges of the working class from a working-class perspective, and we attempt to connect those problems to potential solutions.

We report on the abuses and wrongdoing of corporate power, and we seek to hold accountable the ultra-rich who have too much power over America’s political and economic systems.

Something to think of. If these rich people are building their 100th home in Montana and pricing the locals out to the point where they can’t afford to stay, why not change careers into construction? And the state gov makes it clear no illegal labor to short cut the labor costs.

And ironic the story is making it about the state was once a union state and now it’s not because the state shifted to tourism. Confident that’s false and the state had to meet new environmental regulations closing out those industries like OR did with their lumber industry and PA with their steel industry.

Whats the problem? This is what were allowing all over the world without a fight. But dont worry, soon UBI will be a thing 😂 the rich are going to pay to keep us alive. Work wont be necessary, they just give us free money and accommodation. Hilarious.

They didnt care when it was across the street. But now its at their door. The impoverished communities of big cities plagued by years of systemic issues shouted this…. The rich told you it was the poor's fault. And now theyre after yours.. what a surprise. All while they get richer and richer.

Those of us working in service of the ultra-rich can just barely afford to live here, let alone save up and buy something of our own! No wonder there are so many suicides and DUI arrests!

I live in a resort area, the only people building and buying now are the multimillionaires.
30 years ago, a normal house was around $150k. You can’t buy the smallest buildable lot for less than $500k and the cost to build (before tariffs) was around $1 million for a 2000 square foot house.

Can you do a video on Montauk Long Island New York? Same kind of scenario has happened here where the wealthy have completely changed what was once a small fishing town. It used to be an escape from the rich Hampton people but now it’s just like the rest of the hamptons in terms of pricing

Lakes Region NH!!! Ultra wealthy buying second or third houses (also Justin Timerberlake 👀), leaving no land on our beautiful lakes undeveloped, every business is short staffed and our schools are dying because young, non wealthy families can’t afford to live and be successful there if they don’t already have connection to the town. The problem has been increasing since I was a kid but during COVID the area and the tourist that visit completely changed.

tax cuts you say for the "1%" is a tax cut for every consumer, an incentive for business and creates more competition. The consumer and lower tax brackets win too. If you want equity and handouts then move to Venezuela. This an a basic economic practice liberals never understand… 😂

When I went to college in Bozeman in the early to mid-90s, all I'd hear about was "liberals flooding in from California and changing everything." Sure, there was the occasional Cali millionaire that would buy ranchland, but it wasn't endemic – it wasn't near enough to change the feel, politics, or personality of Montana. Compare that to Montana being flooded with hordes of far-Right Californians and Texans during the pandemic, and that DID have an impact on all of the above, including the cost of living.

Every community in Montana is working diligently to find ways for everyone to afford housing. But, it is simply a matter of supply and demand. Reports like this are riddled with liberal, Democratic party bias, as well as alluding that those who cannot afford Montana are victims. No one is entitled to live anywhere they cannot afford. And government should not enact ordinances that restrict those who have worked hard to attain, in favor of those who have not.
