Why everyone is talking about Judas Priest’s new live video…

Metal Pilgrim | February 2, 2026

Judas Priest just released the first professional live footage from their 2025 Shield of Pain tour… and in all honesty, it is very different from what I expected from it.

So today, let’s take a deeper look at Judas Priest performance at Hellfest this year released through ARTE, discuss some controversies around it, and then talk about what it may mean for Judas Priest future. Here we go!

Judas has been a part of my life since 1978 …, my favorite band !!! Twin lead guitars. And a vocalist that is beyond comparison dead on with all the notes probably at least six octaves maybe seven. He sits the mood and the standard and the emotion for all the songs and the guitarist Glenn and KK starting out set the mood for the vocalist to be able to sing and emotionalize the words that he was saying. This is one of the most awesome if not the most awesome heavy metal band ever in history. I love these guysand I know they can’t go on forever but they’re doing a damn great job even in 2025 with a newer guitarist and drummer, but Rob Halford’s voice is still carrying the emotional drama in the power of the show.

I totally disagree. I think Painkiller only has two jaw dropping tracks – #1 & 2. The rest of the album
Is overrated, over produced, and on par with Metallica’s eponymous (black) album… I’d rather hear Defenders of The Faith – all tracks. Or 2 songs off every album. I know many will disagree and I don’t care.

I have seen them three times in the last 18 months, including last night, and when you are actually there, you can't question the authenticity. It's really Halford doing it. Yes, there are some delay, echo, chorus effects at certain parts, but he is really singing.

Also, I'm going to see Judas Priest and Alice Cooper here in Chula Vist, CA. in October. Cannot wait for that, it's going to be awesome!!!!

I just got one thing to say as a longtime priest fan. They started in u.k. With 19 songs for 3 arenas than cut it to 17 which was ok. But I spent 400$ for 2 tickets for a top show coming to U.S. than first show they add some no name filler group and 1st show cut to 14 songs I love them but this is bull. I don’t need another no name group they weren’t on ticket when I purchased it.

❤I saw Judas Priest on this tour in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and I have seen them since the late 70's and to me Rob's voice is just as incredible now as it was then. Saw ticket prices for the Priest/Cooper show here near me and sadly I must say being a disabled veteran this tour will be the first Priest tour I'll miss due to ticket prices and income level. 😢

Unfortunately, I just compared the pro-shot footage with live one and, on the example of The Serpents And The King, the vocals are clearly doctored – Rob does not even attempt to hit some of the high notes on the raw footage, especially in verses, and when he does, he often does falls a bit flat and from time to time his voice cracks. It's a shame though because his live vocals were still mighty impressive – not as squeaky clean as on proshot video, but still energetic, powerful and that bit of roughness adds authenticity that's just part of extreme live vocal performance that he still shockingly delivers at 74 years of age. They could've left it as it was, but I guess perfectionism won.

Been a fan since Sin after Sin… seen priest a lot over the decades … I am a singer myself And sang in a priest tribute band … Rob Halford is the the best Heavy Metal singer of all time! It’s not even close…Dio… Bruce..Plant.. Geoff.. Ozzy..all agree!!! Lol

3:01 – That's exactly how I see it, even though I didn't think of it that much when it first came out (I was already into Pantera and Sepultura at that point). But even then I couldn't help noticing that it was more metal than metal itself, and I feel that way about it even now, that's just an undeniable fact!
If you don't believe me, ask Javier Bardem.

I've been watching for a while and just don't get what is controversial. Rob Halford is one of the best vocalists of all time so I'm not surprised. Whatever technique they might use I don't care, it's clearly not autotune or dub so who cares? This video feels clickbaity sorry disliked

Ted nugent was like 72 last summer in July and played with Derek in Detroit for Salute our Warriors. He nailed everything. I would know because I was right next to him.

This type of thing happens at many concerts. You gotta fix the stuff if you’re gonna release it to the public. That’s just the way it is. It wasn’t the band’s fault. It was the engineer’s fault.

The "is this real?" convo isn't anything new. Similar conversations revolved around Thin Lizzy's "Live and Dangerous," UFO's "Strangers in the Night" and Priest's own "Unleashed in the East"; i.e., legendarily "live" albums that combined studio trickery with live recordings the band (and their studio engineers) touched up (often the vocals, even back then). It's generally a combination.

I'm wondering why no one talks about what happened to Rob's voice in the early 2000's. On Live Insurrection he sounded brilliant and on the Reunion tour very bad. What happened between these two years with his voice? It can't be a matter of age, cause he got better and better every year again since.

Just watched it and was very impressed. Very Painkiller heavy. But no Leather Rebel. My dad and I got front row for their tour along with Alice Cooper. I'm hoping for this set list and Alice Cooper going heavy on Hey Stoopid since they did this tour back then.

Priest is coming to Sacramento with Alice Cooper in October. I was thrilled until I saw the absolute obscene prices for a ticket. Unacceptable. If they are going to try and charge me ridiculous prices then fuck them.

Sounds almost exactly like when I saw them live a few months ago with the exception that Painkiller the song is better here. When I saw them Rob really struggled with that song.

I don't care if Halford's vocals are supported or artificially enhanced though it is possible they are not. If anyone's knowledgeable about operating at the edge of vocal capacity, it's Halford.

Also, he did it when enhancement wasn't available. His legend is secure. The man isn't immortal though he might seem so. See him while you can.
