Theoretical physicist Alan Lightman suggests that our universe is one of many possible variations, leaving physicists at a cosmological dead end. Lightman’s latest book is The Accidental Universe: The World You Thought You Knew.

Alan Lightman:

Alan Lightman is a novelist, essayist, physicist, and educator. Currently, he is Professor of the Practice of the Humanities at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Until 2003, he was John Burchard Professor of the Humanities at MIT.

TRANSCRIPT:

Alan Lightman: For centuries scientists and especially physicists have believed that we would be able to show why our universe is as it is as a necessary consequence of certain fundamental principles and laws. Like finding – having a crossword puzzle with only one solution, the given certain very fundamental principles like the law of conservation of energy, that there would be only one self-consistent universe allowed. And that has been sort of the holy grail of physics and we have been pretty successful in showing such things as why snowflakes have six-sided symmetry, why raindrops are round, why the sky is blue as necessary consequences of a small number of physical principles.

What has happened in the last ten years or so – or 15 years – is we now believe – when I say we, I mean most theoretical physicists – now believe that our universe is just one of a vast number of universes all with very different physical properties. And all of these different universes originate from the same fundamental principles. So there’s not one solution to the crossword puzzle. There are many solutions to the crossword puzzles. In that case there’s no possibility of explaining why our universe is a necessary consequence of the fundamental principles. There are many, many different possibilities. Some of these other universes might have 17 dimensions. Some of them might have planets and stars like ours. Others may have just an amorphous field of energy with no planets and stars. Some of them might allow life like our universe. Some of them may not allow life. And our universe is just one lucky draw from the hat.

In which case we are accidental. We are an accidental universe. And so the historic mission of science, and especially physics, to show that we are – our universe is the unique result of a certain set of fundamental principles – that historic mission is no longer feasible. It’s no longer possible. This conclusion makes theoretical physicists extremely unhappy because it means that a lot of our mission is an illusion. But that may be the way nature is.

So theoretically if our universe is an “accident”, then it is possible to recreate? If we become more advanced ourselves, it is possible that we can recreate life on other planets. Supposedly an accident can theoretically be recreated on purpose. Or… Maybe the universe wasn’t created by pure chance, and maybe some things we are never meant to understand or able to comprehend.

This is something that took thousands of years to discover and takes many years in school to understand a lot was all made by none intelligence?
A universe that functions so intelligently was made by none intelligence?
Why are the people behind the screen wants to program everyone always from the truth?

I believe in god. But if I am wrong and it is all just an accident, it would just be depressing. Think about it. The universe for some reason just went the extremely improbable way and produced creatures which can ponder on their own existence. Even if god isn't real, you will probably live a better life believing in him.

If we are an accident we’re not just one accident but hundreds upon thousands of accidents that had to happen just right for us to be here. I’ve here a guy on the tube same it is as close to mathematically impossible as it can get without being 100% impossible. He compared it to rolling a set of dice and got many times you would have to roll to get the same exact results however many times he has a number. Way he explained it made sense though.

Everything here has its purpose, entire system as closed circle with factors in that system, each factor created to fulfil its role inside of that system to satisfy or realise that purpose, the system and factors in it are created for.

For example, entire ecosystem is intertwined with factors like predators, herbivores, plants and even environmental changes to SUSTAIN LIFE as its Purpose.

We have system/s in human body that keeps it alive.

Laws governing the universe, laws governing chemistry etc.

Non believers, when you will prove that two random atoms SUDDENLY have crashed together and made everything?

Why an automobile can't be created by 'nature' just by random atoms crashing into each other?

    Or an airplane?

Most of the living creatures and processes are far more complex than the automobile for example.

And in creation of an automobile the intelligence, necessity and purpose was needed.

It takes a serious and even extreme manipulation of ores, chemistry and electricity to make any car.

So, how can you believe that atoms are having their own brains, can think and imagine anything or more precisely, that the universe and everything in it is made just by random atom collision only?

They are severely dumbing down the people here by paying people to like and comment videos like these to dissipate Stupidity.

Yes, armies of people are paid to like and comment videos like these to make people DUMB.

Fact check first, understand than decide what is right first.

    I've done mine, did you?

    that makes no sense though…
how can it be an accident if it happened.. that means it was 100% ALWAYS POSSIBLE… hence why it happened.. cause it was 100% GUARANTEED TO HAPPEN based on the patterns that allowed it to happen…

just cause we dont know the "changes" cause like it or not we dont have a number to how many universes their are.. so how can we claim and put a percentage on a universe that has life.. our universe…?

a coin.. there is 2 sides.. we know thats a 50/50…
    or a dice… 1/6…
now.. number of universes…? we dont know..
butt that in a sense would mean every universe every is a 1 in infinite number of flips..
and each one has a 100% chance of success if landed on.. and even if not.. it still has a 100% POTENTIAL change to exist if landed on..
lets lets u flip this universal dice of 1/infinite and infinite number of times…
pretty sure we could say there every possible side if gonna land and its gonna do so more then once…

just something i like to think about… fyi: im not saying its true.. just me having fun thinking..
    ==============================

in terms of "god" i like to say "mother nature" is that "god…"
its drive is to grow and evolve… starting from first simple elements of early universe to more diverse elements that create new things that repeat this process to make newer elements.. that eventually lead to life which via evolution does the same thing.. it mutates and grows and evolves.. which eventually leads to say conscious right.. which will grow and grow.. then say maybe via humans.. mother nature evolves from biological life to artificial life… say humans eventually evolve into HUMAN AI.. who then master physics even more and faster.. grow an even greater from of conscious and awareness.. etc.. and u just keep going and going up..
then maybe who's to say "life" via artificial life wont get so evolved they can start breaking into new universes and dimensions that arent similar to the one they started with… butt via fundamentals that all universes share.. we learn then adapt and evolve to master those other universes as well..

basically in a way.. think of existence and the universe as biological evolution right…
life happened and it just evolved didnt have the capacity to understand anything other then surviving right… then via humans.. biological life now had the ability to look back on itself and discover what it was..
so maybe on the great scale.. this is the universe.. its just growing and evolving… then conscious happened and starts seeing itself and as it continues more and more it via conscious has a better and better understanding of its own nature.. and just like with biology once we know enough we can alter it… so that would be comparable to manipulating physics and particles..

What state of being is "nothing" (made of)?
Simple logic of three apples on an object represent the sum existence of the visible/empirical total. In order to make the object have zero apples on it, (In actuality) any form of reduction cannot cause the apple's existence to no longer be. The form of reduction may re-move the apples from its place, and even reduce its form (when eaten etc.), but cannot invalidate the apple's existence of its new form despite measure of visibility.
    Selflessly,
Ps. A basic global fundamental of the number zero (0) as merely a place holder, truly describes the actuality of something as only reduced (in whatever form) from its existing place. What is the all encompassing 1st Cause for all things in existence, but proven with empirical validity of an oxymoron "perfectly infinite" character trait? (before religion or science)

Word right the universe expands and we wonder if it's a mistake I find that funny because of everything points to creator or creators no matter what science you look at you end up finding formula that prove evidence of creation and life all we had to do is look at home here on earth
