This Monitor Changes Everything
Head to [sponsor] https://squarespace.com/nostalgianerd to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code nostalgianerd ~ We’ve been waiting two years for the Checkmate Display to get here. I mean, I have at least, and now, I finally have my hands on a production model. So, in this video, I have a chat with Steve, the guy behind Checkmate, we take a look at the monitor and then I do a light bit of testing to make sure all is in order.
By the way Steve is an absolutely lovely guy, I haven’t been paid for talking about this product. I just think it’s superb.

This isn't sponsored by Checkmate or Steve or anything like that. Steve is a lovely guy, and I'm a big fan of this thing. I love that you can just have this sitting on a desk, with all your favourite systems connected up, and they're all good to go at the press of a button. Stay tuned on updates as I use it at https://www.instagram.com/nostalgianerd/

Wish these would stay in stock. I want one for my Commodore 64 Ultimate.

This did not deliver what it promised. It’s junk. Basically a cheap Chinese $40 scalar with a so so IPS panel that has backlight bleed . It needs many many fixes like it can’t display a straight line , they appear wiggly. The VGA is a mess doesn’t work with a Dreamcast. Also if you plug anything into the VGA, that disables the SCART socket. All the SCART INPUTS look grainy and it’s very difficult to centre any image they are always offset. The speakers have a buzzing noise all the time and vibrate if you turn up the volume. The GBS control module is difficult to connect to and has only 6 presets that you can redefine. I could go on there are many other faults with this thing. It’s a prototype not fit for sale as a one monitor solution. I’m still using external scalars and HDMI converters with it which kind of defeats the very point of this monitor. Stick with an OLDED/LED and an OSSC/Retrotink combo you will get much much better results. This thing is a CON.

Can windows 11 work on this monitor

I have to say that I am very disappointed with mine. Even with washers on the bezel there is still light bleed. The panel itself is Grimm, blacks are grey and colours look very washed out. The speakers make a buzzing noise. It does nothing better than my previous setup of a cheap LCD TV and an OSSC. for the money I really regret buying this.

Amazing!! I could replace all my CRTs just with this one.

This looks amazing. Just makes me wish more that I hadn't got rid of all my old computers 😢

CRTs are really expensive, difficult to maintain, and except for certain very specialized applications they're not made anymore by anybody. So, an OLED that can connect to several kinds of retro systems without a spiderweb of cable, adapters, and scaler boxes, and display those retro systems correctly is much appreciated. Still not the same as a CRT, but at least it does have the black levels of a CRT.

How does composite look with glitch art? Like a dirty video mixer

A good retro platform and monitor but it doesn't change everything. The original quote price would have made it a killer but at the current approximate five hundred pounds plus tax plus shipping etc it is out of the scope of many.

Cool but not worth $600, I can get a crt for less than that.

9 months and it's STILL on pre-order. I am beginning to think this is just another failed Kickstarter. Maybe this one is the only one we shall ever see which is a shame, but sadly inevitable for a Kickstarter project. Shame.

Am I crazy or is this just a standard flat LCD panel stuck in a big unnecessary plastic housing to look like a CRT
@rs2klee
January 23, 2026 at 2:33 am
oh well, thought this was going to be a modern CRT but ends up a fancy hi res monitor with lots of inputs, ok if you have the consoles and old computers. With all the advanced tech we have today why dont anyone come up with the modern CRT with the most common inputs we need. ?

This is great for my upcoming retro inspired build with the Silverstone FLP02 case.
However, I would like one with at least 1440p resolution.

Too much £££ for an ips screen, great idea and im not saying it dosent look kool. But add in appys retro scaler and your taking £700, thats in range of an 55" oled tv 120hz.

Please do a honest side-by-side with a 10€ thriftstore pick-up in the form of a Dell 2007WP.

Why? Just look for a dell 2000fp. They're cheap and have a full spectrum of analog inputs including svideo, composite, vga, dvi… It's absolutely perfect for retro gaming and it's a 20" 1200×1600 display.

I fortunately own one myself and still think that this is one of the very best products I have purchased. Retro gaming paradise 😄
Now I can play my Philips G7000 console again.

Just thought of something this could be good for debug dev. It pain to plugin each monitor to test if work or not. It all in one input video and sound.
